NAFSA REPORT: MAKE SURE CIR DOESN'T LEAVE OUT NEEDED STUDENT VISA REFORMS

Rate this Entry

The fine folks at NAFSA have issued a report reminding people why the US needs to retain its commitment to international education and needs to fix many aspects of the current system. This sums up the importance of the subject:

All prudent steps must be taken to prevent another act of mass terrorism on American soil. But a policy based in fear, that causes us to turn away from the world, is profoundly inimical to American security--because openness is part of security. The United States needs international students, professors, researchers, scientists, and future leaders coming to this country to further our universities' educational mission, teach our students, increase mutual understanding between the United States and the rest of the world, enhance our economic and scientific competitiveness, and support U.S. international leadership. There is no escape from the responsibility of achieving the necessary balance.

The report is chock full of good ideas and worth the read.

    Hi Greg,

Any feedback on CIR being introduced today? Does the
    bill include Nurse Bill?

We first need to abolish Section 214(b) for students and heavily restrict its use in the case of tourism. Until last week I would have said that oil prices were a number one stumbling block to recovery. Today it is the US State Department and Section 214(b) which makes sure that our hospitality industry and education does not take advantage of the low US dollar. Let us make this clear..the US State Department with its Section 214(b) is the major stumbling block to US economic recovery!
