Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

ANTIS TARGETING MODERATE REPUBLICANS

Rate this Entry
Former Congressman JD Hayworth is considering a Republican primary challenge against John McCain for his Senate seat. Hayworth was one of the most anti-immigrant members of Congress and was defeated by a pro-immigration Democrat. Now Hayworth intends to use immigration as the wedge issue to defeat McCain. And he might win the nomination if you believe recent polling. Except that he will likely lose a general election for the same reason he lost in 2006. The hardcore anti-immigrant base in the GOP has the power to knock off moderate, pro-immigration Republicans in primary races. But they end up with candidates that can't win a general election. Arizona's Senate seat should have been safe for the GOP next year. Instead, if Hayworth wins the Democrats stand a great chance of picking up the seat.

It seems clear that the republican party refuses to learn the lesson when it comes to this issue!!

Rasmussen polls are frequently outliers and uses more right wingers in the sample. There is a talk about McCain retiring and Jeff Flake making a possible run. I would believe that Arpiao has a better chance of knocking out Brewer than Hayworth knocking out McCain. Some of the rabid right-wingers such as Steve Moore of the Club of Growth are also pro-immigration.

Those hard core antis don't usually come with just the anti-immigration views alone. In their baggage there is a whole range of tea-party-like stuff that scares independents and moderates.

Pros should be more worried about GOP family values philandering Rudy Gulliani getting elected over Gillibrand....so much for GOP family values!

Just a politician..like Gulliani who went the other way and Feinstein who was first against it, now for it and the politically expedient Gillibrand who was against it before she was for it (shades of Kerry)..at least low life scumbag Hayworth sticks to his guns as do Tancredo and Arpiao and decent folks like McCain and Graham also stick to it.

One more note about the garbage polls from Rasmussen...it is the only poll showing Obama and Palin tied for the 2012 elections. Rasmussen has too much money and time.
