DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSMAN FACES PRIMARY CHALLENGE OVER IMMIGRATION ISSUES

Rate this Entry

This is an interesting development. House Democrat Dan Lipinski is being threatened with a primary challenge from Jorge Mujica, a well known Hispanic leader in the Chicago area. According to Mujica, he's taking on Lipinski because of his immigration voting record. Lipinski's record has been mixed on the issue but given the metro area he represents, one would expect stronger pro-immigration positions.

Congressman Lipinski and Blue Dog Democrats will need to think about whether they can take Latino and immigrant voters for granted. Polls have consistently showed for some time that most voters rank immigration low on their list. But Latino voters are the exception and they have turned elections over this issue. That means that being anti-immigration is not likely to get you a lot of additional votes and certainly not enough to offset votes that could be lost.

Over the last several election cycles, an impressive number of Republican Congressman have lost their seats for being anti-immigration and President Obama likely won five states because of the GOP's anti-immigration positions. The only election I can think of where a pro-immigration candidate lost on the issue is in a Republican primary challenge against Chris Cannon in Utah. Democrats with weak immigration positions have largely been left alone, however. Democrats like Debbie Stabenow in Michigan represent large numbers of immigrant voters, but have voted against pro-immigration measures at critical junctures. And they have not been held accountable even though they could very well lose re-election if pro-immigration voters chose to stay home or vote for an opponent. That needs to change.
