CNN'S LATINO DILEMMA

Rate this Entry

On October 21st and 22nd, CNN is set to air a four hour special entitled Latino in America hosted by Soledad O'Brien. The show is a major deal for the news network and they have been heavily promoting the show for a while in an attempt to appeal to the expanding Latino viewing audience.

CNN, however, wants to also go after the big right wing audience at rival Fox News. They're the home of the Lou Dobbs who is probably the most high profile anti-immigrant in the country and is generally despised by this country's Hispanic citizens.

Pro-immigration/anti-whacko forces have been uniting to try and get CNN to dump Dobbs. I've reported on the boycott effort before, but Media Matters and America's Voice, have recently been trying to air this ad:

Politico and Media Bistro reports today that CNN has reversed itself and is now refusing to air the ad. According to Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America's Voice, "CNN's decision to give 4 hours to the challenges faced by Latinos in America is no match for the 260 primetime hours the network gives to Lou Dobbs each year to practice his dog whistle demagoguery. Keeping little guys like us from standing up to the Dobbs the bully does not change this fact. Today's decision by CNN to refuse to air an ad criticizing their prime time anchor further erodes CNN's claim to be 'the most trusted name in news.'"

Media Matters and America's Voice plan to run the ad on a competing network instead.
