ARPAIO'S POWERS CUT IN HALF

Rate this Entry

[Sorry about earlier problems with this post - so much for Typepad's email service]

Some of the comments have already let people know this important news, but it's worth bumping the story up to a post. Phoenix's county sheriff has been brazenly taking on the Department of Homeland Security and his far over-reaching use of the 287(g) program has led to a civil rights investigation by the Justice Department of the Maricopa County sheriff's office.

Now DHS has responded to the problems by stripping Arpaio of his department's ability to make immigration arrests on behalf of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Arpaio's jail officers will still be able to check the immigration status of jailed individuals and can turn those individuals over the ICE.

Arpaio said politics were to blame for this major loss of power. That's an interesting comment coming from Arpaio who has looked for every opportunity to milk his program for as much national publicity as possible.

Greg, you apparently have some characters in the post body that breaks rendering, at least in Firefox 3.5.
In IE6, from which I post this comment, it works, but IE6 is phased out.

    Greg,
The Nobel committee probably deserves a special mention in the blog. Probably inadvertently they showed the power of immigration. Medicine, Physics, Chemistry--Most of the recipients were born elsewhere and became naturalized citizens. Those who are not, had spent substantial time in US as researchers or students. It also speaks highly about the academic environment in US and the opportunity it provides to people around the world. It will be an irreparable loss for everybody if this academic culture suffers due to a broken immigration system.

Just as a side note, antis claim (From San Jose Mercury News Comments Sheet), if these Nobel winner immigrants were not here, the awards would have gone to US born citizens. I am confident that US born scientists are will keep doing Nobel prize winning research with and without immigrants. Many of them have done wonderful research with people around the world. Funny how antis spin everything to fit their twisted thought. H1N1, Leprosy, crime, Nobel and the list goes on

Do these idiots really think that Nobel prizes are only awarded to Americans? It is just like saying that without the American consumer Asia will not recover. Asia is doing very well thank you, without the American consumer and because of the attitudes of the antis. And by the way Professor Ramakrishna is now in the UK. I am pretty sure that some place outside the US would have offered him a job and he would have won the Nobel.

Again these are the same people who say the best should get the job when it comes to quotas for minorities but themselves want quota against foreigners, particularly Asians. Racist Mark Kirkorian argues that there should be a strict limit on foreign students in the US..however, he is silent when someone asked him if he is willing to fight against budget cuts that adversely affect American students...he told me that budget cuts are none of his business, neither are jobs that go abroad..their only goal is to keep foreigners from moving into America..to this end they are going to fight against foreigners buying property in this country even if it means the collapse of the housing market!
