This is one program I do not approve of! They need to disband this and the numbers to employment based immigration. As far as I know only Australia had a similar policy until the 1960s and it was restricted to under-represented whites only..defined to include East Europeans, Jews and South Europeans. In the early 1960s this was extended to include Latin Americans. In the mid 1960s the lottery classified Lebanese and Anglo-Indians and other Indians as white (as long as they could pass for one..Indian Bollywood movie actors could pass for white). And then in the 1970s the diversity lottery and the white policy ended!

Australia suffered from high unemployment from the 1960s to late 1990s due to heavy reliance on natural resources. Finally, in 1997 the Howard administration emphasized skill immigration and the rest is history as unemployment declined to 3.5% by 2007..the lowest since the 1920s as foreign investment poured in following the migrants!

Should read disband this and add the numbers to employment based immigration!

totally agree with George, scrap such racist programs along with 7% nationwide quota in employment based immigration. Stop this racism.

"totally agree with George, scrap such racist programs along with 7% nationwide quota in employment based immigration. Stop this racism."

Racism does not pay. Eventually we will loose Social Security revenues and tax revenues and face draconian cuts as jobs move abroad. Seems to me that this is a cynical attempt to postpone the day when whites become a minority in this country...by letting in more Europeans..if they are skilled, they should go through the skilled immigrant visas and they should stop sending jobs abroad by removing the 7% nationwide quota.

What can I say, I totally agree with George and adi.

I fully understand the original purpose of this program but with EB visas backlogged for years wouldn't it be more worthwhile and smarter to just add the additional 55,000 visas to EB?

55,000 visas a year is a lot and best just added to EB immigration.

My 2nd choice, add it to Family-based immigration that are waiting for years as well.

Giving random visas to people just because their race is under-represented in the US when both the EB and FB system are severely backlogged is kinda dumb. Sorry for the choice of words but I really think it's dumb and the visa numbers given elsewhere.

Was watching one discovery show on tv. It showed a guy from Kenya who came here via lottery system. He was driving taxis for his living. While documentary was in relation to something else, this lottery thing did get stuck in my mind. I guess US needs more taxi drivers than it needs, doctors, engineers, nurses, scientists.

Come to think of it why is there a shortage of nurses, doctors in this country? Why is it that when unemployment is so high we are having trouble finding people to work in science fields (personal experience)?

This evil racist program needs to be shut off and the 55,000 visas need to be moved to retrogressed countries in EB3 category like India and China. We need to make some good of it, so why not make it into something like "affirmative action" where we can use it to correct injustices in EB3-I stemming from racist country quotas! Indians and Chineses need to have their mobility. If these are the most intelligent and most well-educated peoples in the world, they need to have a chance to prosper. Enough with racism and discrimination!
  8. George Chell's Avatar
If the lottery program is concentrated on only people with skills I have no problem..but it is a joke! US probably is trying to keep racial balance in its population and postpone the inevitable..when whites will become a minority in this country!

You need to have aptitude for science and engineering. Every tom, dick and harry or for that matter Ann, Susan and Mary do not a scientist or engineer make. Would you want to fly in an aircraft designed by an engineer who cannot say twenty times twenty is four hundred without using a calculator? I dont.

Hi, George. How about getting ill and going to a hospital to find out if you have is just the regular seasonal flu or the H1N1 flu but the nurse and physician having contact with you chose not to get vaccinated for either regular flu or the H1N1. Then you find out you just have the regular run-of-the mill cold.

After your check-up, you probably already caught either the regular seasonal flu or the H1N1 already from your nurse and physician when you just came in with colds.

From what I am reading, a lot of nurses and a few % of physicians don't want to get vaccinated for the H1N1 and even the regular flu shots and they are challenging mandatory vaccinations being imposed by NY State and individual hospitals and health facilities across the US.

Wearing N95 masks (while effective) while in the hospitals won't cut it either as sooner or later they will go back home and go to their neighborhoods that is where they will get it since they are unvaccinated.

I agree with KJ. This program should be disbanded and the visas redirected to EB3-I. We have to start addressing the injustice!

You and KJ thinks it should only be directed to EB3 India and China?? Now, maybe I have to re-think everything I said and now thinking that maybe it should be re-directed to everyone else except EB3 I and China. Really, the two of you are showing your selfishness.

"This evil racist program needs to be shut off"

This evil racist program provides the only opportunity for some people to immigrate to the US. In fact, I have worked with two people who came through diversity, and they were wonderful to work with (and had graduate degrees to boot). I don't think country quotas are any, however, you can't brand the only immigration program US has that does not require outrageous grounds for eligibility as "evil". That's just stupid.

I agree with Jim and legal. Well partially.

Jim: If the 50K visas were put to the EB pool, everyone would benefit, not just I/C. As the worst affected in the backlog though, I/C do have the most to gain as well. I presume that is not a problem? And I agree that the numbers certainly can't go "all" to particular countries, though I do not think that's what these posters intended to say and it cannot happen anyway because of the EB3ROW backlog.

LNLW: Those "graduates" end up with soem special treatment don't they? Anyways, teh issue to em is not that theere is a "diversity program", so I partially agree with what you said.
I do question the presence of country quotas "to ensure diversity" when a diversity program alraedy exists! Either one or the other is needed, having both puts people like me way behind in the line. Those with similar or even far fewer qualifications than me, that happen to be ROW, have had a GC for years. I may not have one for years :-(

No! No affirmative action for anyone! All country quotas should be removed and the best people should be hired until the overall quotas are reached. If we dont do this, we will loose jobs to countries such as Singapore as I had posted evidence on this in another topic..and we will have draconian cuts in social security...now that is the Grassley-Durbin vision for America! Morons both of them with no brains!

Sorry but the way they worded their statements I think that was really want they wanted to say.

I think you are giving them too much benefit of the doubt.

Unless, either one of them come back here and say that that's not what they meant to say then I will continue with my impression of them.

It's not like people don't monitor certain well-known websites that has majority of their population thinking that it is only them that needs help.

However, I agree with you and George. This is not going to happen anyway so it's moot to even further discuss this.

Exactly. The problem is with racist country quota. If you put disband the program and put all the visas in EB-3 category, then they will be all taken by EB-3ROW because of another discrimination and injustice. This will be pointless. The only way to address the injustice is to give them to retrgoressed countries like EB-3I.

    KJ,

I do not see anyone supporting country quotas. But given that they exist...if 50K GC were added to EB3 and even if they go to ROW, they STILL move you up that much further. Your rant is frankly misplaced even though your frustration may be understandable. So quit while you are ahead (and that time has passed already).

    George and Jim:
When it comes to quotas (and I do not see you speaking for them), or for any program, benefit should be weighed against harm. If the difference in approval time was a year or two for a retrogressed country, one could argue the value of diversity. But does a decade of delay for some, based entirely on country of birth, justify this whole nonsensical notion?
