Thanks USC. Really interesting article and hopefully people who get emails citing these phony statistics will reply to the senders with this piece.

Well, that settles it. If some email has inaccuracies, illegal immigration should be condoned I guess. I see a lot of find the most offensive jerk you can find and paint every non-pollyanna on immigration with that brush.

'estimated that 15% of the county workforce was outside the regulated economy in 2004. Illegal immigrants getting paid in cash, it said, probably made up about 9% of the workforce.'

Oh, is that all? Not exactly a bullet point in an apologist's case for ignoring illegal immigration.

'Once again the "statistic" more than doubles the actual figures. According to a 2006 story in The Times, there were 41,240 Medi-Cal births to "undocumented women" in the county in 2004. They accounted for 27% of all births.'

So the actual number is *just* 27%.

'And they spread them around until all that fear and anger turns into a big hate'

Uh-oh. I wonder what Hector would make of an email containing 100% accurate statistics questioning our current immigration policy. I wonder if he's a typical 'question anything about immigration from whatever policy perspective and I will reflexively accuse you of being a hatemonger' type. Or the less accusatorial but still chilling 'even if *you're* not, your ideas will incite violence--so shut up' type.
