Rate this Entry

A lot of nice tributes to Senator Kennedy recognizing his immigration achievements. Here are a few:

Ted Kennedy's Greatest Accomplishment: He Created Americans - Dana Houle of Daily Kos talks about Kennedy's shepherding through the 1965 Immigration Act.

From HIAS.

From the National Immigration Forum.

From the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

From the Immigration Policy Center

From the Migration Policy Institute

Partha Banerjee in the McClatchy News Service

And here is a speech Senator Kennedy gave in 2006 promoting his immigration reform bill:

Those links bear out my observation (which was deleted yesterday) that it is consistently mentioned that the composition of immigration was changed in '65 but not about the radical increase in the number (which continues to this day). For better or worse, increase in population over the last four decades plus is arguably Edward Kennedy's greatest effect on the United States.

Increase in population and internationalization of the otherwise backward US population living in the stone age practising strange customs such as Jim Crow, and the accompanying US prosperity of the 1980s and 1990s was the biggest achievement of Ted Kennedy. Ted Kennedy's immigration and doubling of population model was adopted by bright leaders of Singapore which resulted in prosperity, greater foreign investment, one of the cleanest environments in the world and one of the lowest unemployment rates with high paying jobs for foreigners and locals alikes. On the other hand, reduction in population in the Former Soviet Union, especially Belarus has resulted in catastrophic economic decline, environmental degradation and increases in poverty. Jack, Numbers USA and Negative Population Growth Inc., want us to adopt the East European model of no immigration which will see us mired in recession and not just a lost decade but lost decades. It is for us to choose! Either follow the Singapore models to prosperity or follow the Former Soviet model to economic degradation and increased poverty! Jack wants us to follow the Former Soviet model. Having lived in both Russia and Singapore, I would rather have the latter, the quackery of population control be damned!

George, at what population level do you think it best that the U.S. population stop growing?

    ////

And social science says you have the population growth-prosperity connection backwards:

'During the twentieth century, the global population has gone through unprecedented increases in economic and social development that coincided with substantial declines in human fertility and population growth rates1, 2. The negative association of fertility with economic and social development has therefore become one of the most solidly established and generally accepted empirical regularities in the social sciences.'

You hear the argument that the advanced countries must resort to mass immigration to counteract low fertility rates. This suggests the 'problem' takes care of itself:

'Although development continues to promote fertility decline at low and medium HDI levels, our analyses show that at advanced HDI levels, further development can reverse the declining trend in fertility. The previously negative development-fertility relationship has become J-shaped, with the HDI being positively associated with fertility among highly developed countries. This reversal of fertility decline as a result of continued economic and social development has the potential to slow the rates of population ageing, thereby ameliorating the social and economic problems that have been associated with the emergence and persistence of very low fertility.'

And any supposed 'need' for mass immigration.

    Jack:

All BS. Explain to me why fast population growing Asia has higher economic growth than the countries with population decline such as the Former Soviet Union. You have not answered that question and neither have any of the jokers who claim that population is related negatively to economic growth. I would rather trust Mr. Lee Kuan Yew who actually developed a country rather than some armchair folks writing in Nature. Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas has economic studies showing just the opposite.

There is a potential to reach Jupiter, but that does not mean it is going to happen. After they slow the rates of population ageing and when it has a direct positive impact on economic productivity and direct negative impact on health care expenditures the author and yourself can come and talk. As of now these statements are hearsays and not based on facts. Slowing population ageing..I will believe that when they literally show me that Elvis and Michael Jackson are still alive. When you can finally slow population ageing and reduce health expenditures we can stop relying on mass immigration to increase productivity, ie., when at least 60% of people between the ages of 70 and 75 are gainfully employed. I need evidence, not some potential BS. Until then I would rather go with the success story of Singapore than the BS given by the population control industry.
