CORNYN TO OBAMA: MOVE IMMIGRATION FASTER

Rate this Entry
Texas Republican Senator Jon Cornyn is publicly complaining that President Obama should finish immigration reform in 2009. That's an unexpected source of pressure and if it means Senator Cornyn is a full convert and plans on supporting a CIR bill, this is great news.

Not going to happen! However, Cornyn coming on board would be great news! Look for the fight between Demented DeMint/Racist Sessions Vs Graham/Cornyn.

Cornyn has always supported immigration, infact he was the one who had drafted the monumental SKIL BILL, which would have pretty much solved all of the legal immigration problems, but Sessions was the spoke in the wheel who wanted it bundled in with the CIR ( so it would eventually fail, by itself the SKIL BILL had strong bipartisan support)

No reform, the consequence would be more death from swine flu!

Cornyn has been a supporter of legal-immigrants, especially EB. Hope he doesn't change that stance in the name of courting Hispanic votes.

I don't trust what this guy Corning says, he has never really supported CIR.

    Greg,
Hasn't "Senator" Obama been "President Obama" for a good 6+ months now ?

Cornyn was a cosponser of SKIL bill. He is a supporter of legal immigration.

If supporting "CIR" is litmus test then Obama can forget about counting on 99% of republicans and most of the "centrist" dems.

Just look how much good the Repus have done over the 6 years in Congress and WH to understand how much they really support immigration. Same with Cornyl - lip service only. I bet he calls for CIR "sooner" because he knows it is not going to happen, and thus is safe.

    Hi Greg,

What do you read from this article?

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/12/us/12border.html?_r=1

Found it on HLG, who is contributor on your blog as well. Their opinion seems to be nothing will be happening in immigration for some time now.

I didn't really see any news here. This was what the White House was saying in the spring and they've been consistent.

Bending to public pressure to go slow on Healthcare bill it appears from the above press report, the deliberations on this bill might well go into next year. What does this new development mean to CIR ? ... My best guess is the chances of CIR are getting slimmer by the day !!.

The best chance for CIR is between November 2010 and May 2011. Perhaps Cornyn can do something about Sheriff Arapaio in the meantime.

I wouldn't count out HC reform just yet. It is being constantly negotiated via the backdoor as well.

Latest news says that the WH may not be anymore pushing the public option and is ok with non-for-profit co-ops that the GOP wants instead of the public option. They are also dropping languages that has created fears to the public. Many thinks just by dropping the public option in lieu of co-ops may just be enough to pass it.

Tort reform, making sure abortion is not included in the coverage and changing a few vague languages to take away public fears I think would just be the icing in the cake.

    Just my humble opinion, though.
