OBAMA ANNOUNCEMENT KEEPS THE ACCELERATOR ON IMMIGRATION REFORM

Rate this Entry
A few readers have posted links already to a statement made by President Obama at the North American leaders summit that immigration reform is a priority for early 2010. Some see that as a retreat from efforts to move the bill this year. But 2009 was not really realistic anyway not because the votes aren't there but because there is a very practical logistical problem of getting a bill done in just four months. The immigration bill is likely to start out at close to a 1000 pages and the drafting is going on behind the scenes right now. Senator Schumer is targeting Labor Day for the introduction of a bill. It has to then go through Senate committee markups. It will then will need several weeks in a floor debate. Then the process needs to be repeated in the House. Everything would need to go at a super-accelerated pace in order for an immigration bill to happen this calendar year (which has just four full months left). Early 2010 is probably a more realistic completion date and even thought 2010 is an election year, the politics of the bill won't change that much if it is delayed a few weeks or months. So I really don't see the President's announcement as changing anything in the works.

They will have a window of opportunity to debate, pass and sign legislation between November 2010 and June 2011. By that time barring unforseen circumstances (speculators running rampant and pushing oil to $150 a barrell, for example), unemployment will be declining sharply and the economy would have already staged a stronger than expected recovery. If that window is lost, it may be born for good. It is a very narrow window.

We can only hope that tess party/townhall crazies will wear out a bit by the time immigration reform is discussed.

I think the republicans will unleash these crazies again for CIR, and will have FOX news spreading the hate. But its part of how DC works I guess....

I guess, they will surely try. My hope is that many people who watched the healthcare/birther crazies are just going stop paying attention to all the yelling and shouting.

As I said, it has to happen right after the 2010 elections and get the bill passed by April 2011..it takes till summer after the elections for the crazies to get their act together.

I agree the shouting crazies will turn many people off as this does not resolve the underlying problem at hand healthcare /Immigration.
