The political will in the Senate is definitely there.

Problem is, it's always the Senate we are hearing. We hear nothing coming from Nancy Pelosi, Zoe Lofgen, et al

I've heard that the problem lies in the votes from the House, Senate seems fine, what's Greg's view on this?

    Jim,

Its beyond the hands of Zoe. If it gets through the senate, House will take it up and get it done. It will be really great if it gets past the senate as Reid is saying. What might need to happen is other issues such as health care reform needs to happen fast or fail fast (I hate to say). other wise squeezing this into fall is going to be tough. McConnell is already yawning saying that us folks in KY dont care.

yeah some bluedogs in the house are going to be an issue but I feel that it will still pass in the house, if it gathers the momentum in senate

from the past experience with all the immi bills introduced, i think its the other way around. if they know that it will pass in house some senators would vote for it who would otherwise remain neutral (or worse against it).

    @AD

I agree, HC reform and the Energy bill needs to be done rally fast so that there is still time to squeeze immigration reform.

Hope you are right that the House will get it done if the Senate is able to get it passed.

Still dont believe that immigration bill will be dealt with this year with the focus on health and energy which should take up another nine months or so. It will be a miracle indeed. The recent Washington metro crash should convince us that hiring only one nationality is a recipe for disaster. Everyone here in Singapore asks me how this can happen in a developing country. I tell them that the Singapore Airlines performs well because its workforce at the planning and decision level is multi-national made up of Aussies, Singaporeans, Americans and Indians among others. Same for other profitable airlines such as Emirates, Qatar, Cathay etc. Airlines which hire only one nationality such as Japan, Air India and a host of US carriers tend to make losses and the same predicament has befallen Britis Airways. Although no empirical evidence exists the anecdotal evidence is indeed clear.

I think that if the bill starts in the Senate it will be because things are shaky in the House (despite the fact that you only need 50% in the House and 60% in the Senate). But I also think House leaders don't really care as much about getting this done as the Senate leaders.

if Coryn is on board, we are pretty close to have a deal. If this pass the senate, the house will be easier.

Wasnt Cornyn the one who got like some 500 amendments to the CIR last time? I thought he was against CIR. Did he get smart and change his position? If so, There is some one else other than Mccain in GOP who understands the importance of CIR.

    Greg,

Assuming its get past the senate, Dont you think CHC and others interested would push to get a vote and get this done? There are 257 Dem votes and there are a handful of blue dogs (out of 52) who are also members of CHC and others who support CIR. There are going to be few republicans who will vote for the CIR and I dont see how we cannot get past the 50% which is 218, assuming Pelosi will get a vote after the senate passes it. It would be a political suicide for her if she does not get a vote after this passes in the senate

Coryn has always been on board for immigration, its the racists like Jeff Sessions who derail it. Though logically i don't think CIR will get through, but my gut feeling tells me otherwise. lets hope for the best

    LEgal,
Cornyn was never on board in the 2006 and in the 2008, and he is in important figure which can lead the no nuts repubblican on board. Session and the others will be forever agains immigrants, so no worry at all

I have heard from a source that there is some kind of deal between Cornyn and Schumer, but the proof will be when Cornyn publicly acknowledges this. But it does sound promising.
  14. OMZ's Avatar
Does anyone know if the bill would also include people that have been deported before and returned illegally into the United States?
  15. OMZ's Avatar
Would the bill also favor illegals who have been deported before and returned without inspection?
  16. AD's Avatar
If Cornyn is really willing to work with schumer on this and get this done, I would say Cornyn has bigger ambitions.. You know what I mean.

That makes me think that components of SKIL will be part of CIR...

From what I hear, EB green card advocates will be very happy.

The racist monster Jeff Sessions should be shut out of the debate this time around!
He is such a disgusting creature, a true good'ole boy xenophobe!
In fact, they should pass a special bill deporting him back to Alabama!
