Greg, shouldn't Red Wings be hiring locally!!!
With unemployment in Michigan being so high why should they hire someone from Sweden or Russia. If they can't find local candidates, they should train them.

Huh - I'm presuming your comment is meant to be cute. But you raise a point worth exploring. All of the NHL teams choose to recruit the majority of their players from foreign countries. They are also entertainment companies that have a single mission - to sell tickets to a product their fans want to see. The fans want to see the best product and they DEMAND that their teams recruit the top global talent. And maybe that's why the NHL is the world's top hockey league.

Do you think consumers want Apple to hire only Americans and make a decent product or do they want Apple to go out and find the world's top talent and make the iPhone? Do you think patients want Johns Hopkins or the Mayo Clinic to hire only American-born physicians or do they want the world's top doctors at our premiere medical facilities? I can go on and on.

Greg, I am NOT trying to be cute here. It's just frustration. When a minor league ball player (NOT the best) can get a greencard in 6 months why can't a PhD?

A recent WSJ letter to editor had a quote from a parent on how a spelling bee contest had just paragraph in the newspaper while every damn sport event was given 'apt' coverage!

I bet NOT one lawmaker would propose the 50-50 rule applies to sports teams.

Without a greencard I represent my school/employer in broader sense US in international events but half the swimmers in schools, MLB players, NBA players etc who making a living in US and many of whom are US citizens still represent other countries and Lou Dobbs has no issue with that!

Historically, it's always been 'target the weak and the unrepresented'! Now the weak are the H1b holders. Earlier they were the Italian, Irish, Asian immigrants.

My frustration has turned into fear now, I fear for my family (even for my American kid). There are comments on Business Week, Computerworld articles and a few blogs which call for violence against visa holders. I hope it doesn't happen and sense prevails!

Huh - I understand your frustration. Just for the record, there is no green card category for minor league players. Only the very top athletes can qualify for a green card in the EB-1 category. And that category is getting tougher - a 60% drop in approvals over the last two years.

But you raise something that I find frustrating. Immigrants from groups that are not being treated fairly lash out against other immigrant groups they think are getting fair treatment instead of focusing on the people who are delivering the misery - a Congress that ignores their needs and an immigration agency that is completely dysfunctional.

HuH....Red Wings hire locally? You're kidding right? I live in Detroit and I can tell you there is no one around here who can skate like any of the Wings, and even if there were, signing a few guys would not help the local economy, (nice thought though). You can't "train" someone to skate like Zetterberg, Daysyuk, etc, it would be like teaching someone how to be Derek Jeter. Impossible. Anyway, the Wings help the economy by bringing people downtown to the Joe, and they're a great bunch of guys, no matter where they're from.
