SENATE TO HAVE HEARING ON UNITING AMERICAN FAMILIES ACT

Rate this Entry

Kudos to Senator Chuck Schumer for raising the profile of a serious issue - discrimination against same-sex partners in US immigration law. Even as several states are enacting marriage equality laws and anti-discrimination laws are moving forward around the US (including here in my home town of Memphis), the antiquated Defense of Marriage Act prevents USCIS from treating these families fairly. The UAFA would be a huge step forward.

The Senate will have its first hearing on the bill tomorrow. My friend Chuck Kuck, president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, has posted his written statement here.

Thanks to reader Fabrizio for sending the hearing link.

It pains me to see pederasty taking higher priority than DREAM act, nursing immigration, or the retrogressed EB categories. But what can you expect from an ultraliberal administration and Congress? I guess real issues aren't so 'fashionable'

    Dear Kamal,
Pederasty is a relationship where one person is not of the legal age of consent.

The UAFA is for partners in a committed relationship where both are 18 years of age or older.
    Go read the ACT!

Perhaps you don't know what pederasty means, but either way, I suggest you stop using it so loosely.

    Mr. Jain,

Equating gay relationship with child molestation is way old.... That argument has been used and lost ... Take your bigotry somewhere else...

On the other news looks like some of the "CIR advocates" are not happy with adding same sex partnerships to the bill...

Lets see how this plays out ...I think gays will be thrown out under the bus as usual so are the EB guys when it comes to workable bill ...Which makes me think that status quo is not bad when "reform" just includes Durbin and Grassley and no EB relief ..

BTW, I am gay and EB guy waiting inline ... A double whammy for me ...

Why shouldn't I oppose any bill that makes my life more miserable that what it is now...?

Talking of Dream Act , I understand why kids should not be punished etc.. But why dream act applications should be processed in premium processing without any fees? USCIS charges $1000 for any premium processing we know of ..

I think this kind of laws should be enacted only if congress is willing to fund.

    Here is the link

"SEC. 10. EXPEDITED PROCESSING OF APPLICATIONS; PROHIBITION ON FEES.

Regulations promulgated under this Act shall provide that applications under this Act will be considered on an expedited basis and without a requirement for the payment by the applicant of any additional fee for such expedited processing."

Or maybe there is an ulterior motive in involving gays in immigration. This would be another one of those tricks that will be used to sink CIR this year, and at least Democrats won't be accused of not trying to push for CIR.

Personally, I have nothing against gays, but I don't really think they have any business in immigration bills. Their issues should be resolved by legalizing and recognizing their marriage by the federal government (and not just for the purposes of immigration). The rest is just a joke. Come on! Don't you get it? How many gays will get relief from this immigration bill, as opposed to the other groups affected by the current immigration system. Just run the numbers/percentages, and you too will come to the conclusion that this is just another smoke and mirrors tactic.

Ofcourse, that is always a possibility ,using gay partner benifits as a poison pill to sink the whole immigraiton bill.

If congress is serious about gay rights they have to abolish DOMA first and recognise same sex unions as "marriage".

As I said earlier .. Dems will throw gays under the bus in a split second.

The whole CIR process looks like CIRcus for me , as it was in 2007.
