SESSIONS BECOMES CHIEF REPUBLICAN ON JUDICIARY COMMITTEE

Rate this Entry

Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama will become the ranking Republican on the Judiciary Committee under which the Immigration Subcommittee is included. Sessions has been one of the Senate's most vocal opponents of immigration reform. Sessions may only be in for the remainder of this Congress and then he is expected to pursue the ranking position on the Budget Committee. Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley has indicated his interest in pursuing the Judiciary job when the next Congress is sworn in.

With the huge leads that the Dems now have, it will be at least 2012 before the GOP has any chance of taking the Senate. In 2012 the Dems are defending a lot more seats than the GOP. However, if the Dems only loose two or three seats, the GOP may not gain power until 2014.

Well hopefully with the dems fully in control he can be kept in line or become irrelevant.

"In 1986, Sessions was nominated for a federal judgeship by Reagan. The nomination was killed by the Senate Judiciary Committee, which refused by a 9-9 vote[3] to let the nomination come to the Senate floor for a vote. Sessions' opponents accused him of "gross insensitivity" on racial issues.[2][4] Sessions made a variety of comments that opponents pointed to, including remarks that he thought that the Ku Klux Klan was not so bad until he found out that some of them smoked marijuana.[2][4] Sessions also had once labeled the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) "un-American," "Communist-inspired," and had said that they "forced civil rights down the throats of people." At his confirmation hearings, Sessions said that the groups could be un-American when "they involve themselves in un-American positions" in foreign policy.[4][4] Sessions claimed that the remarks had been made in jest.[2][4] One of those voting against him was Democratic Senator Howell Heflin of Alabama."

Should we be happy that Grassley did not get it?

Grasshopper would have tried to kill EB immigration. Not that Sessions would do any thing different but the bigotry of Grassley makes me feel that this guy has no clue on what he is doing.

I hope Iowa becomes a blue state and votes Mr Grassley out. After all, Iowa is the one that led us to President Obama.

Only if the Dems loose the majority...not likely.

Only if Vilsack or Culver run.

Is Session against Nurse Bill (new version of 5924) also? Has anyone got an idea as to when the revised version of 5924 is likely to be introduced?

    Kavitha:

All I know for sure is that Sessions is a racist. Whether he is against nursing bill or not is not very clear to me.
