Still does not get at the reality. The reality is that Americans love to say that they will pay a higher price for products designed by Americans. However, they never put their money where their mouth is. Just like they say they will pay higher prices for US produced goods at Safeway but end up purchasing cheaper Chinese products at Walmart. Even if they try in good faith to purchase US producats made by an American, they dont have the money. It is just like those anti-tax demonstrations, but they all say someone else's pet project should be cut, and not theirs.

Second, the reality is people such as Ron Hira have their heads buried in the sand. Jobs will go out of the country no matter what. If they cannot hire a H1B here, they will hire one in Canada or in Australia or Singapore. That is the reality. Not buts, ifs and thens. The only reason why folks such as Ron Hira, Norman Matloff and George Borjas still peddle their voodoo that if an immigrant is shut out that the jobs go to Americans is simple: the economists have abdicated their responsibility. To this day no one has done any work on the impact of skilled migration restrictions on the outward migration of Foreign Direct Investment and jobs. Everytime I talk to economists they weave tall tales as to why such an analysis is difficult.,,and this is a profession that does even more complicated math than engineers. The reason is not much money. It is more glamorous for folks like Roubini and Rogoff to get on TV to preach gloom and doom than to do serious work challenging the baloney put forward by Borjas, Hira, Matloff and others, two of the three not being economists. May be one of these days we will get a study on migration and FDI.

    >>>It was pure Walt Disney material that can be summarize this way: Student comes from overseas, studies in the U.S. at a prestigious university and then must fight for a visa in pursuit of the American Dream. This is the prevailing theme in most H-1B stories. It's very, very easy for a publication to get a tech firm on the phone with a hardship story about their H-1B workers.

    Goerge/Greg,

No offence but Ron Hira sounded like a joker on CNBC. I was watching this CNBC tee off between Vivek W and Ron H. Ron was like 1 in 5 of the H1B applications are fraudulent. The host reporter goes on to say "so 80% are good why are you asking to uproot the whole program". He does not have an answer.

Ron or his parents immigrated from India and he wants to shut the door now. Probably Ron/his parents displaced some American worker too, if we just simply argue like Ron/Lou Dobbs/Kim Berry.

Ron is a public policy expert, he keeps saying that he is for permanent residency but does not tell how he will make skilled immigrants PR's if he wants to uproot the H1B program which is the single most contributor to the EB immigration. He either must be severely naive to be in bed with Lou/Kim Berry and ilk if he is really hoping that these guys will push for a skilled immigration once they dismantle H1B program or he must be extremely sophisticated and playing the same old divide and rule among the immigrants. I think he is the latter.

People who are stuck in retrogression might think oh look Ron is a good guy, he wants immigrants to come to US but does not want to have the H1B program which has been a source of contention.

Ron Hira's parents migrated from India. He is one selfish and deluded individual who has no clue about economics. However, as I said, I blame the economists for the direliction of duty and abdicating their responsibility..particularly the international trade economists. The vaccuum created by these jokers who are more interested in media circus (Rubini and Rogoff come to mind along with the quack who calls himself an economist Niall Ferguson) has resulted in Ron Hira, Norman Matloff and George Borjas filling the vacuum with their voodoo.

Let me tell you my pure selfish viewpoint. Dont care about anybody's suffering. But, more people like Sanjay work in Canada, the less the tax revenues, and less the social security revenues, and if Hira is interested in his social security (perhaps he is not!) he better worry about jobs going abroad. Ron Hira is an economic quack who knows nothing about the workings of Foreign Direct Investment, outsourcing or anything else. There are others in other countries as well. In Australia another quack by the name of Bob Birrell comes to mind..a demographer who masquerades as an economist! So we have company in other countries! This is why Singapore does not allow its university faculty to study skilled migration into Singapore and it does not release such data..they told me that there is plenty of scope for mischief..I guess from the likes of Hira and Birrell!

Well there is another Indian who comes from a different angle..though similar to Ron Hira. He is Divesh Kapur of the University of Texas..his view is he has made it but everybody else should return home to help their country..dont know whether he gets support from FAIR and CIS. He basically said that everyone should be sent home in his book with Kevin Hale.

Attitude and wickedness aside, I found the article kind of interesting. Anti-H1 crowd has no friends, no influence, no money - that's kind of true. The unions don't care about them. I am no big sympathizer of the unions, but on one side we have unemployed high school graduates in their 40s, who had 20 years of blue collar experience and now struggle to get some training (mostly, in using a computer) and find a place in such radically different economy. On the other, the losers' guild types, with all the skills and education [former auto workers would love to have] in an industry with 2% unemployement, and average income the auto workers never dreamed of. I can see why the unions are not very sympatheric and probably think that there is gotta be something wrong with the anti-H1 crowd, if they can't find a job under such favorable circumstances.

Article also blames Obama for being... well, smart and caring about country's future. How dares Obama to care about such insignificant things! :-)

Union, Nurse's Union or Looser's Guild..they all are putting the blame elsewhere. No one protests when there is an education budget cut except some African Americans down south! First the antis such as FAIR and CIS dont protest because they dont give a damn if the jobs go abroad. Their only goal is to keep this country majority white. In fact, one FAIR sympathizer told me that they would have dealt with the Civil Rights groups much more severely if Hawaii had not become the fiftieth state and the 1965 Immigration Act, ie., had the Asians not shown up. Before the Asians showed up in last numbers according to these clowns, they knew their "enemy"...African Americans demanding Civil Rights. The arrival of Asians and later on Hispanics meant too many enemies at the same time.

As far as the Unions are concerned it is the heritage..their dads and grandads worked in auto and they want to continue the tradition. Also the pay was not bad.

The Nurses Union has not opposed education budget cuts in the past that adversely affected nurses training. Their goal is to keep the nursing graduates small so that the wages go up, even if some nurses work overtime and malpractice insurance rates rise as the risk of screwing up by sleepy nurses go up. They dont give a damn about health care costs. These budget cuts worked to their advantage creating shortage and driving the wages up. They have an interest in keeping the health care costs high and foreign nurses out of the country.

Finally the looser's guild whose godfather is Ron Hira. The looser's guild did not oppose education budget cuts either. Again it works to their advantage if there are both fewer American graduates and foreigners are kept out. Simple economics or so they think. The only problem with this argument is jobs migrate abroad and the computer programmer wages have been going down. The looser's guild members could do something else..get fellow Americans to compete with the foreigners and help them memorize multiplication tables without calculators so that they can get perfect scores in GRE. But, why do this if we can get Grassley and Sessions to cut education budgets, promote incompetence by forcing firms to hire Americans from third rate schools and pay higher wages..only problem is that we live in a global economy and both Hira and the looser's guild forget this and they continue to think that firms wont outsource if Indians and Chinese dont come here...delusional!

"Simple economics or so they think."

If this was the 60ies, yes.
But since we have a global economy nowadays, keeping the supply low is not going to work anymore.
That's why the looser guild people need to go back to school into econ 101...

Looser guild cannot be blamed when they have so-called economists such as Ron Hira and the intellectually dishonest economist George Borjas backing them up! Perhaps Hira needs to take Econ 101 and Borjas needs to attend honesty school. But, then again why just blame them. There are quacks such as Bob Birrell (who is a demographer) saying the same BS as the looser guild and I can find several examples throughout the world including the biggest quack of them all...Niall Ferguson of Harvard a historian masquerading as an economist...that he has even managed to fool people such as Fareed Zakaria of CNN who invites him back again and again! In the final analysis economists particularly those specializing in trade and foreign investment have to be blamed...here is their opportunity to prove Borjas and Hira wrong..but they have abdicated their responsibility because folks like Rogoff, Feldstein and Rubini have more to gain from spewing their doom and gloom on CNBC than do any work on migration and Foreign Direct Investment!
