MORE EVIDENCE THAT WHITE HOUSE IS SERIOUS ABOUT IMMIGRATION

Rate this Entry

Thanks to reader Jim for sending this link from the Wall Street Journal. Rahm Emanuel, the President's Chief of Staff, is now acting as one of the loudest advocates for immigration reform in the Obama Administration. Why is this important? Because Emanuel, when he was a leader in the House of Representatives, was a vocal critic of the Democrats pursuing immigration reform and he previously was quoted as saying the Democrats should not take up immigration until a second presidential term.

Emanuel is one of the most influential voices in the Administration and if he is on board, that will no doubt provide a tremendous boost to efforts to get the bill passed. He's a man that doesn't lose very often.

It's always good in current politics to count "Rambo" as your friend, specially with his influence at the WH.

Is it serious or not? According to Navarette, the WH "waffles" on the issue

Greg, thanks for the link. The White House is just testing the ground at this point but this does sound promising.

Kamal Jain: yes, Navarette is a fool who represents nobody. I would not listen to what he says, it is of no consequence.

I think some form of reform will take place, but it will be a very long process.

They will probably let the debate go on for a while to get people's emotions under control and once people are at the point of " I could care less" they will make it happen. Timing is important if it does not happen this year the House will be in full re-election mode in 2010, then it will definitely not happen. 2011 may have a chance early on before Obama has to campaign for re-election. Their time table and political interest will determine the faith of any chance for reform.

There seems to be a mini-explosion of news coverage after the NYT article 2 days ago.

Here is another recent one from reuters that touches on the economic benefits:

They can build on this for the wrong timing-not now we are in a recession excuse.

I think passage of legislation sometime in the first half of 2011 is more likely with the economy probably starting to boom! (wishful thinking on my part about the economy? Perhaps. But, did not expect the stock market to go up 25% during the past month!)

I personally think you are not just wishful thinking about the US economy. I think the biggest booms in US history are those coming from a very deep recession and the stock market is usually 6-9 months ahead in indicating a robust economy.

Once the economy finally bottoms out (if it hasn't yet) there's nothing to go but up, up, up from here.

The old and some say fake US economy will cease to exist and a new economy will take over.

My colleague Steven Johnson at Institute of International Economics says that we are in for a lost decade..I tell him that only if we go the way of Japan, ie., put up trade and investment barriers and follow all the recommendations in Mark Kirkorian's book.."The Case Against Immigration." Barring any such disasters, I think may be by mid 2010 we will see 6-8% growth rates for the US economy for two or three quarters going into early 2011. Then it probably will be decision time regarding shortage of labor and immigration..otherwise watch the feds to sharply raise the interest rates to slow the economy down! People really think higher wages above productivity can be sustained. Such junk economics comes from Professor George Borjas of Harvard and Professor Vernon Brigss of Cornell..yes they forget globalization and the fed raising the interest rates!

I'm far from being an economist but I don't think the US is on the same path. With all the bailouts and the $3.5T budget I just don't think it's the same.

Japan is stimulating their economies for years now but only after they let it die in the first place. You can't stimulate a zombie economy. It should have been done early and in draconian manners.

They would rather build nurse-robots than let nurses from other countries to come in. An microcosm of their whole economy, I think.
