PHOENIX MAYOR: ARPAIO IS TO ARIZONA WHAT SHERIFF BULL CONNOR WAS TO ALABAMA

Rate this Entry

That's an apt comparison. And for those not familiar with this guy, trust me, this is no compliment. By the way, for those Arpaio fans who will probably post something obnoxious in the comments, Connor had people who made identical arguments about African-Americans violated segregation laws. Mayor Phil Gordon is worried that Arpaio is ruining the state's reputation. The fear is certainly justified.

In a separate development that made me laugh, Sheriff Joe is calling the House hearing on Arpaio's activities a "witch hunt" that is just a "publicity stunt." Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black? Google "Arpaio publicity stunt" and you'll get more than 4,200 hits. The man depends on publicity like it is oxygen.

And I have feeling that the fired Dallas police officer Robert Powell will be re-hired in this town or he resigned because he got a job in this town!

Reminds me of 2 Fox newscasters that says they are fair, balanced and does not spin.

Even Int'l viewers who have watched them for the first time spots them right away as being bias and keeps churning spins.

Whoa. Are you implying that restrictive immigration law is morally equivalent to racial segregation law? On a moral basis, that's the kind of leap you have to make in order to be compelled by variations of 'full citizenship rights now for all immigrants'. I don't consider someone who supports limited immigration by law to be the same as some KKK member who supported segregation on a rule of law basis.

For people like Mayor Gordon who express concern over profiling, I am of the belief that problems arise when you give too much discretion to the street level enforcers of law and that probable cause is difficult to precisely define, inherently problematic, and hard to prove when abused, etc. These are legitimate concerns. However, when it comes to immigration, the first thing I want to know about these objectors is 'Do you support moving toward deterrent measures which would make such street level enforcement issues much less
prevalent?' If not, why should I not just conclude that you are against immigration law in general? I.e., what are you FOR , if anything, when it comes to the enforcement of immigration law?

To his credit, Greg says he's for more audits as opposed to raids--an actual answer! A lot of people don't appear to have an answer at all or just say they're for CIR even when they're already on record in opposition to the kinds of enforcement that are likely to be in the next proposed CIR. Why should policymakers (and the public) take such people seriously? Ironically, these are often the ones who insincerely say the 'restrictionists' don't have any answers other than mass deportation.

"Well then, why do they all have brown skin? I'm not kidding here, but where are the Canadians? The Asian? The Europeans? Why don't we see them being paraded around like circus animals? He's (racially) profiling."

Again, I don't make light of the issue but it makes you wonder when/where can you arrest someone with brown skin and it NOT be profiling? I think that, for some people, interior arrests of someone with brown skin are always improper due to racial profiling. I remember Jorge G. Castaneda say that arrests should only be made at the border. Hmmm...it's well established that the capture rate there is very low and that if you are captured you can often just try again. So if a person with Castaneda's position is also against deterrence, what should I conclude about how successful of a limited immigration system they really want?

And Joe will get reelected with 80 % of the vote again just as always because he is doing just what his constituents want him to do.

Yes! Pretty much racist bigoted constituents..and they wonder why there are not many foreign takers for the many expensive foreclosed homes in Tempe.

Segregationist politicians also were very popular in generations past. Popularity doesn't equal morality.

No argument form me! You will hear arguments in favor of segregation and banning non-white immigration from James Edwards who lives in Memphis and operates a radio show called Cesspool. His treatise on a teen movie about a romantic relationship between A Korean Australian and an European American is as sickening as any I read from the Civil Rights era!
