PLACEHOLDER COMPREHENSIVE IMMIGRATION REFORM BILL INTRODUCED IN SENATE

Rate this Entry

Senate Bill 9 has been introduced by Harry Reid and has not much more than a title at this point - The Stronger Economy, Stronger Borders Act of 2009. The bill's stated purpose:

A bill to strengthen the United States economy, provide for more
effective border and employment enforcement, and for other purposes.

The fact that the bill has been introduced is the important thing. It shows immigration reform is a priority for the new Senate. This may be an indicator that immigration reform is going to be taken up quickly rather than pushed off until 2010 or later.

Government needs money. They can get money from undocumented immigrants via penalties and application fees to get GC.

I agree with you. However, to be fair to those trying to get in legally and currently waiting in the queue for years they would have to be placed at the back of the line. The fees, penalties and backtaxes are of course should be given up front.

If there will be a way where everyone can be given their GCs on time then it would not be a problem but that would be physically impossible as there are millions trying to get in and so, there is no way to avoid prioritization.

Also, the text says: "to prevent illegal immigration". Undocumented immigrants getting in front of the line will not send that message.

    Just my humble opinion.

Great news!!!!! looks like they are making immigration a part of the economic recovery. It makes sense not to leave 12 million people on the sidelines we need everyone, besides we will need all the taxpayers we can get to pay for HUGE deficits of the Recovery Plan and the Bush years. Lastly the backing hispanics gave Obama and the Dems in the past elections can not go unnoticed, this will make the issue go away for republicans allowing them to compete for these voters and recruit many more voters for Obama and the dems.

I am not sure why US immigration policy is unfriendly to some one who has legally staying in the US and paying all the taxes. But US immigration policy is softer to illegals. It does not make any sense. I am sure thousands of families of these legal immigrants have money to buy properties and start new businesses, if they get their GCs. I hope they don't have to wait behind these illegal immigrants and also I am worried the immigration department may be overwhelmed dealing with the millions of new applications.
