KOSHER BEEF SHORTAGE LOOMS AS AGRIPROCESSORS NEARS COLLAPSE

Rate this Entry

It's hard to have a lot of sympathy for Agriprocessors, a company that appears to have acted in a pretty brazen fashion not only in hiring illegally present workers, but in how it allegedly treated those workers. On the other hand, the meat and poultry industry in this country has been placed in a no win situation where it can choose between hiring illegal workers, going without US workers or simply moving its operations overseas.

Now Agriprocessors appears on the verge of collapse and Kosher meat shortages are already cropping up.

Nonsense. These companies can always obey the law and hire only employment-authorized workers. This "no win" situation that the meat and poultry industries supposedly find themselves in would come as news to Tyson Foods and Perdue Farms, both of which participate in E-Verify.

Of course, E-Verify was forced on these companies after they were brought to their knees in the criminal courts. They also have enough market power that they have been able absorb the impact of the crackdown (at least to some extent by passing the costs on to consumers). The little guy doesn't have that same ability.

Will antis like yourself be honest in telling American consumers who are already facing the toughest times in our lives that we should pay a lot more for food in order to keep our Mexican workers? Because I don't think they'll want to hear it. And don't say Americans are lined up to take these jobs. A laid off white collar worker in LA is not moving to rural Arkansas to pluck chickens.

I guess ICE feels like is helping to create jobs in the US by doing these raids rather than to fix their own problems and the immigration system. But in the mean time people better brace to pay up simple supply and demand.
