AMENDMENTS DELAY CONSIDERATION OF BILLS IN HOUSE JUDICIARY COMMITTEE

Rate this Entry

Ugh! No movement today on bills to increase nurse visas and recapture wasted immigrant visa numbers. HR 6020, a bill to improve visa processing for soldiers and their families did pass and that's certainly great news. But there were so many amendment proposals on that bill that there was no time for anything else. And there is no word yet on when the committee will reconvene.

HR 5882 wasn't discussed at all due to amendments upon amendments brought on by Steve King on bill 6020.

Deliberately, he also used time delaying tactics by discussing irrelevant situations and topics. He must be a member of that anti-immigrant group NumbersUSA or a friend of Lou Dobbs.

Any idea, if and when HR 5882 maybe brought up, Greg ?

End of the line for the HR 5924. The repeated failures leads me to believe that there's no shortage of nurses in US. If a citizen's right to safe healthcare was in jeopardy, then a democratic Govt would act to protect it. We are just wasting time passing through cycles of optimism and depression every year. Better apply to work in countries where there's actual need for nurses and the attitude of the country to foreign workers refelects this need.

Does any rational person expect any piece of legislation to be passed in the next two weeks by both the Senate and the House and sent to the President's desk for signature? Has it ever happened before? I recall the 1986 Immigration Act was passed by the lame duck congress and the 1990 Immigration Act was passed just before the 1990 elections, but they had been working on it for two years and took full two years to complete. I dont think it is going to happen. If it happens, I believe it will happen sometime next year with the new President.

Peter KIng's amendments show us that many republicans are against all forms of immigration, not just illegal immigration. It would be in the best interest to add many more Zoe Lofgren type of Democrats to the Congress this election.

it is time to move on and search other nursing opportunities abroad...let the USA government solve their own nursing shortage without our help..

These bills will find the solution after the election.
Why would they break their head before that.

Peter King and Lamar Smith are against ANYTHING that provides a benefit to ANY immigrants. Lamar Smith in particular has been blocking progress on immigration for over 20 years now. With H.R. 6020 they are even willing to sell out their supposed support for the troops just so they can spite immigrant families. This bill really shows you where the Republican's true priorities are.

The nuring legislation had been offered as amendment many times last year and finally as a bill this year. Each time it failed different reasons were given; last year it was CIR exhaustion, then resistance by CHC, the economic slump, the anti-immigrant lobby, the nursing unions and now finally the lack of time in an election year. The real reason maybe that US does not need foreign nurses as badly as thought, if the situation was so critical as various statistics on US nurse shortage suggest then the Govt would definitely take steps to rectify the situation. Either the shortage is not drastic enough to affect patient safety or it affects part of the population whose right to safe healthcare does not matter much to the Govt.
Eitherways it is time for foreign nurses to realise that, similar to this year and last year, even next year there will be good "reason" why the bill could fail. Hence applying to country with actual need for nurses maybe a better idea.

All I can say is...you don't know how the govt works The fact that a real crisis exists has never stopped a politician from derailing the solution if he/she is can get some advantage from doing so.

That is why it is absolutely important that the Dems sweep congress and gain 15-20 seats whoever occupies the White House for that matter. These amendments need to fail!

The first priority is to get the Dems to win 15-20 seats. We need to marginalize the likes of Peter King and Lamar Smith.

Lamar Smith is supposed tp be friendly to Big Business, but not when it comes to immigration. Smith and his ilk apparently just want exploitable temporary worker bees with no rights, not immigrants...that is why they support H1B but not EB expansion.
