Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

NEW YORK TIMES COMPARES ICE DETENTION CENTERS TO GULAGS

Rate this Entry

The comparison is harsh, but in light of the Ng case and similar recent incidents, it is fair to say that entering an ICE detention facility could mean putting your life at risk.

The articles concluding words will hopefully get the attention of policymakers:

Immigration officials keep insisting that detention care is
adequate and getting better. But it will take far more than promises of
more audits to build confidence in a system that allows people to
suffer so grievously.

Immigrant advocates have long complained
about the lack of due process for people who run afoul of the country's
convoluted immigration laws. But access to decent medical care is an
even starker problem.

While reasonable minds can differ on some
aspects of the immigration debate, protecting the health of detainees
is not one of them. Allowing sick people to suffer and die in custody
without adequate treatment is unacceptable and violates the most
fundamental standards of American law and decency. The system must be
fixed.

Absolutely right..Gulags indeed! America is slouching towards communism even as China is trying to get out of it!

While I respectfully disagree with George Chell"s "diagnosis" I have to agree that the "symptoms" are disturbingly similar.

In the following case , wasn't there something in the law about people being protected from unreasonable searches and questioning? In what civilized country a visitor can be approached on the street and questioned about his reasons for being there?

Or wasn't there something in the law to protect people from "cruel and unusual punishment" ? Name any democracy, where a person, who is not some violent psychotic criminal, would be subjected to this:

Put together with wiretapping and spying on Americans, our government is spying on us as much as the Chinese although the consequences for the citizens have not been the same.

One more thing. You want to reverse course from slouching towards communism, crush the so-called free market GOP in the US Senate elections..I am glad that America is coming to its senses...

Three southern thugs in the Senate who act like commies but claim to be free enterprise conservatives are Jeff Sessions, Jim DeMint and David "I love prostitutes" Visser (shameless character who still hangs around saying he is for family values)...if trends continue these three thugs will be marginalized!

Want no immigration and dont want a guest worker program aka CIS or FAIR? Higher wages for American workers? Think again!
