Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

BEING HISPANIC IN SOUTH CAROLINA

Rate this Entry

On my annual vacation this year, I took the family to Hilton Head, South Carolina and to a few other spots around the region. I was impressed with how international the community is (not to mention how great the beaches are).

But South Carolina seems to be becoming a hot bed for immigration politics. While you see the typical anti-immigration sentiments popping up in the media, I have seen a few stories in the mainstream media that really make me wonder whether there is something more worrisome happening in the Palmetto State.

Take this story from the Greenville News:

An Upstate senator said Wednesday he wants the state Department of
Transportation to investigate the immigration status of employees for
the agency's contractors, following complaints from constituents.

State Sen. Larry Martin of Pickens said some constituents have
complained that a company which does work for DOT employs all Hispanic
workers.

"I'm going to vigorously insist that all of these
contractors with the state DOT be required to follow the law and some
type of audit be done, particularly when it appears that a large
Hispanic work force is involved," Martin said.

Now substitute the word "African American", "Jewish", "Italian" or you name it for "Hispanic" and see how it sounds. Get the picture.

News flash, Senator Martin - Most of the 45,000,000 Hispanics in America are either US citizens or lawful permanent residents of the US. To assume that a person is illegal simply because they are Hispanic is bigotry, plain and simple.

Then it safe to say that 20% of all Hispanics in the US are unauthorized. It IS a huge percentage. What racial profiling are we talking about if every fifth Hispanic is out of status?

Racism in America is like the gift that keeps on giving, after all the history of it in the US, we just do not seem to learn the lesson or don't really want to. After the hate on Hispanics goes away it will be replaced by another ethnic group or national origin.

By stereotyping people based on the wrong assumption with out factual confirmation of their status and basing an assumption solely on national origin is racial profiling.

Discrimination in the US has to meet the test amongst others on the basis of:

    Race
    National Orgin
    Gender
    Religion

This case clearly meets the legal standard of discrimination.

Okay, supposed you are forced to bet money on which construction firm has any unauthorized workers, and you are given two firms: one all-white, and the other with 70% Hispanic employees. Which one would you pick? This is the choice ICE is facing: they have limited resources and they cannot check everybody, and it is their job to catch those out of status. They know they would waste time going after a firm where everybody is named Jim Crow. This is just common sense. Maybe they are wrong on this firm, but statistically the ration one-out-of-five is going to play a huge role, like it or not.

Likewise, immigrants from Muslim countries are much more often checked for terrorism, and immigrants from former/present communist countries, like China, are more often suspected of spying. Like it or not.

hmm, you are obviously unfamiliar about how many white English speaking Europeans are working illegally in construction jobs, especially, in the Northeast. If you see a white construction worker in Boston, well, chances are, he is an Irish guy with questionable status. Possibly, named Jim Crow.

What you are doing is justifying bigotry. But you need to remember, that's how it all started in Germany in later 1920s-early 1930s.

Indeed I've never been to Boston; maybe it is too cold so Mexicans do not go there. I cannot blame them.

South Carolina is way closer to where I am and I bet an absolute majority of unauthorized immigrants there are Hispanic.

Anyway I am fully aware that there are a number of white unauthorized immigrants, coming for example from the former Soviet Union. Any evidence that they get special treatment by ICE? But the numbers are tiny, just look at the immigration stats by the country of origin. They hardly ever make it to the top ten.

    Hmmm

There is a large number of Brazilian and south-american immigrants in Boston, immigrants go where there is work and they can give their families a better life. And you are still condoning bigotry by rationalizing this senator's thinking. May be you got a bone to pick with Mexicans they beat you up when you where little, isn't that how they said Tancredo started to hate Hispanics, Hmmmm!!!
  8. hmm's Avatar
AV, I actually like Mexicans. Have lots in common with them. Unfortunately my Spanish is poor else I would travel to Mexico more often.

The only people who beat me up as a kid were those of my own race--white. Hated them, still do.

I just think the talk about racial profiling in this case is pure nonsense, and I call it nonsense no matter whom I like. I thought we are having an intellectual discussion and not checking who likes whom and why.

Perhaps Sen. Larry Martin' motivation is racism. I could not care less.

Could not resist: the other side of Mr Navarrette: http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/08/04/navarrette.immigration/index.html who writes

"I'm the son of a retired police officer, a supporter of the death penalty, and a proponent of deporting illegal immigrants. And, frankly, I don't need lectures on crime and punishment. I especially don't need them from those who make excuses for employers who commit the crime of knowingly hiring illegal immigrants."

South Carolina is a racist state. Majority of the whites there support flying the confederate flag. Heck, many even fly a confederate flag over the US flag. As far as I am concerned if it comes between the law and economics, to hell with the law!

No problem if white American males are pulled over every time there is news about a rapist on the loose!

You want to defeat racists like hmm..elect more Democrats to Senate. Then again it is going to happen whether hmm or I like it or not!

"South Carolina is a racist state. Majority of the whites there support flying the confederate flag."

George Chell, what you above is likely true. But I just wish to point out that your statement has the exact same structure as

"a majority of unauthorized immigrants are Hispanic"

which is really all I am saying, and for which you call me a racist. Just because someone lives in South Carolina, we cannot assume s/he is a racist but the odds are this is true.
  14. George Chell's Avatar
    hmm:

Thank you for agreeing with me. They can stereotype Hispanics because it is their preference. I get to stereotype white southerners as racists which is my preference. I hope whites will respect my preference to call white southerners racists...in most cases they get pissed when I do. I also call them traitors for waving the confederate flag..well I know Mr. Siskind is from Memphis...with all due respect to him..I believe he is an exception rather than a rule at least from my experience. I find the white women in the south more racist though!

Well.. You can't beat statistical discrimination. It may not be moral but it's profitable and dead on accurate in most cases. So yes. Majority of Hispanics are illegals, and majority of Southerners are racist. So what are you gonna do about it? And which assumptions hurts whom the most?
  16. George Chell's Avatar
"Well.. You can't beat statistical discrimination. It may not be moral but it's profitable and dead on accurate in most cases. So yes. Majority of Hispanics are illegals,"

    May be.

"and majority of Southerners are racist."

    Likely. Perhaps a substantial majority.

"So what are you gonna do about it? And which assumptions hurts whom the most?"

Majority of them are dumb as well and have low high school graduation rates compared to say Washington State or Vermont. I dont have to do anything. Alabama and Mississippi get low wage investment as does Arkansas. BMW manufacturing would be as high as it gets in SC..no high end research except perhaps some at Clemson mostly conducted by foreign faculty. Lack of tax revenues mean cuts in education and other services. So, these southerners remain dumb and get stuck in a vicious circle. Stupidity means low investment, low investment means low tax revenues, cuts in education and more stupidity and more jobs going elsewhere perhaps abroad. Consequence of racism these states are poorest in America and some are poorer than even the Russians. As far as the illegals are concerned they just move to Illinois or some other state where they cannot pass any anti immigration legislation worth a damn. In the medium term racism hurts the south, while illegals and hispanics move on.

I for one hope illegals move out of the south. Their presence has only helped the GOP and the racist southern white voters. They are included in the census as well as redistricting and re-allocation of the electoral college. Without illegals NY would have had three more electoral votes than Texas and NJ three more votes than Florida in 2000 and we would have had at least four years of President Gore. On November 4, the illegals would probably elect a GOP President by empowering the racist southern whites.

What? George Chell, so you cannot count either? Since when 10M (or even 20M) out of 45M is a majority? Or maybe you do not see the difference between "Majority of Hispanics are illegals" and "Majority of illegals are Hispanic"? That must be it. It is like saying "most women are pregnant" rather than "most pregnant are women".

Hmm, if you like percentages and statistics, you might like this

    http://www.ojp.gov/bjs/homicide/race.htm

As you know, illegal immigrants are mostly neither white , nor black. In the entire US population, including illegals, the "others"( neither white , nor black) are : Hispanics about 14% and Asians about 4% , so if there are any other "others" it will be roughly 20%, including illegal immigrants. Yet the "others" commit only about 2% of the homicides. Now, whites are about 50% in US and commit about 45% of the homicides. That means that compared to the whites , Hispanics and Asians are about 9 times less likely to commit homicide.
In this reports the crime % for the "others" is so insignificant, it doesn't even make it to the charts.
    Numbers are fun !
