HISPANIC CONGRESSMAN COMPLAIN TO CNN ABOUT DOBBS

Rate this Entry

Good. The statement that management does not interfere editorially in the content of journalists is a cop out. Just ask former MSNBC employee Don Imus. And Dobbs and company have made numerous false statements in their broadcasts that would justify action.

"The anti-immigration views of CNN host Lou Dobbs have made him a darling in the ratings" This is all Time Warner cares about, unless people stop watching nothing will change. Its kind of like the Immigration crisis unless it gets fix comprehensively things will just go on as they are now.

No, bad if you care about freedom of the press.

'Baca and Latino senator Robert Menendez, a close ally of Hillary Clinton, said they were "deeply offended" by the lack of response from Time Warner, which owns CNN, to their criticism of Dobbs.'

I am deeply offended that members of Congress have so little respect for the First Amendment. Using (more like abusing) the weight of congressional authority to demand meetings with the press in order to express disapproval with viewpoint content? Talk about a chilling effect. Joe Baca is in serious need of a remedial civics class. Get a load of this:

"You still have freedom of speech, but you've got to put out the facts and information. He lavishes it in a negative connotation, and that goes beyond freedom of speech [NO IT DOESN'T, JOE]. He's a news broadcaster and he should be fair and objective," Baca said. "He oversteps his bounds on the freedom of speech."

Oversteps his bounds on freedom of speech based on his political opinion!? Am I hearing this right? Baca is overstepping HIS bounds. Apparently this guy never learned that the press must be independent of government interference. It's sort of critical to having a free society.

Jack, you are of course right that only CNN should have the ability to dictate its editorial content. But that doesn't mean that the public - and its representatives in Congress - shouldn't complain about hate speech coming from one of the country's most important news outlets. Just because Dobbs' inflammatory remarks get ratings shouldn't give him a free pass to make false statements (and numerous ones have been documented). And the show should be properly labeled as an opinion show instead of a news show.
