IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: ANN-MARGRET - ACTRESS

Rate this Entry

Annmargret
Even since I was a kid and saw Ann-Margret play her glamorous stone-age alter ego on The Flintstones, I've liked this great Academy Award nominated actress. Most people don't know she's actually a Swedish immigrant. Ann-Margret has starred in a variety of light and serious roles over the years including musicals like Viva Las Vegas with Elvis Presley and Bye Bye Birdie, comedies like The Cheap Detective and Grumpy Old Men and dramas like Magic and Any Given Sunday. She was twice nominated for Academy Awards for her roles in the rock opera Tommy and for Carnal Knowledge. She's also been nominated for Grammy Awards, Golden Globes (she's won several) and Emmy Awards. Incidentally, I learned in the course of preparing this post that Ann-Margret actually has a last name - Olsson. There's a good trivia question to impress your friends.

Wow, I am amazed how many of America's biggest stars are immigrants! But then again this is a nation of immigrants, except for the American Indians. The way some people get on, you would think that their ancestors were here from creation.

I still think that actors and actresses and super models are not folks of exceptional ability...rather looks sell (natural endowment and ability are two different things)...we will be able to get equivalent people if we recruited in the US. H1B visas or some special visas yes, but counting them towards people of exceptional ability when there are people who use brains waiting in line, is not very prudent or for that matter right. The country is not racist per se in this regard. But the fact that Kirkorian and Stein (and FAIR and CIS) have nothing to say about this, but keep harping about the miniscule number of H1Bs going mostly to Asians does make them and the organizations they represent, for a lack of better word, racists.
