CBS EVENING NEWS BROADCASTING IMMIGRATION SERIES

CBS News with Katie Couric is featuring a series of stories on immigration that you can catch on the broadcast or at their web site. Here''s a description of the reports:

"IMMIGRATION NATION"

PART ONE  4/7  -   Born in America

We profile and
witness an Mexican woman giving birth in America,  after crossing the
border into Texas to guarantee her son American citizenship with its
privileges, including health care and education.  One of 300,000
children of illegal immigrants born in America every year.  Costing
taxpayers an estimated 1.1 billion in healthcare alone. Frustrated by
the Congress' failure to pass immigration reform, we'll meet a
congressman part of a movement to challenge the 14th amendment
guaranteeing US citizenship for any child born in America. Byron Pitts
reports.  Watch it here: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/04/07/eveningnews/main4000401.shtml

PART TWO   4/8   -  The Border

The only immigration
reform Congress managed to pass was funding to build a fence along the
Mexican border. It's been a frustrating and expensive experiment.
Plans call for only 670 miles of the 2000 mile border to be
fenced...and even that limited construction could cost $50 BILLION when
you consider a lifetime of maintenance.  Yes, apprehensions are down,
meaning fewer illegals are trying to cross into America.  But Whitaker
will show us how many ways people are getting around the fence...how
vast are the gaps. The Administration just announced it will bypass
state laws impeding the completion of this fence by the end of the
year.  But the fact is, if you build it, people will find a way around
it. Bill Whitaker reports.  Watch it here: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2008/04/08/eveningnews/main4002554.shtml

PART THREE  4/9   -  The Farmer

After years of luring
immigrant workers north with farm jobs,   there's now movement across
the border the OTHER way.  We'll meet an American farmer who so far has
had to relocate 25 percent of his operation in Mexico because he can't
find workers. The Western Growers Association says they need 30 percent
more workers than they're able to hire. But a bill to let more farm
workers in legally died in Congress last year.  And so, we'll see our
American farmer harvesting his lettuce crop south of the border, in
Mexico. John

Blackstone reports.

PART FOUR  4/10  -  The Arizona Crackdown

Last year
many states and communities took it upon themselves to do what Congress
failed to do.  And the toughest laws in the nation took effect in
January in Arizona.  If a business owner knowingly hires an illegal
immigrant, they won't simply be fined...they'll be shut down.  And so
we see bus loads of immigrants leaving phoenix.  Schools report fewer
students.  Businesses are closing down.  The owner of a burger chain
tells Tracy he's had to hire two people and spend $500,000 just to
comply with new requirements .. and he's scrapped plans to open 40 new
stores, because it's just too much work. 15 other states are
considering laws like Arizona's.  Ben Tracy reports.

Farming across the border may not be a bag thing. It will drive the prices of products down and help remove subsidies. Farming across the border is not eligible for farm subsidies. On the flip side, the farmers would be paying Mexicans even less than they would have by bringing in the guest workers to the US. This again indicates that I am right and FAIR and CIS as well as Borjas and Briggs are wrong. Not having a guest worker program does not mean more jobs and higher wages for Americans..typical of Borjas's voodoo economics.

    George,

Great Solution and astounding logic. So since it is cheaper to manufacture goods in China, all manufacturing jobs should be sent to China? Well let's see, George's US in 2010:

    a) Manufacturing Jobs - China
    b) Service Jobs - India
    c) Farming - Mexico

People in the US will either be employed by the State or Federal Governments and the rest will be unemployed or lets say have more time to devote to Football/Baseball/NBA etc.

Hmmmmmm.............! You are one smart hombre! Pardon my asking but do you represent the Mexican govt by any chance?

Vick, you should have been around at the time of industrial revolution (early 1800s) - people like you argued back then that if all factories deploy machines, the workers would displaced by the machines, there would be no work in the future, and thus no income. Marxist theories of proletariat revolution came out of those fears.

    Legal,

I am using George's logic that if you can farm cheaper in Mexico then do not bring in guest workers (that will pay consumption taxes etc.) into the US and the economy would grow healthy.

Please read my response with that "logic" and extrapolation from it.

Vick, and you arrived to wrong conclusions, just like the Marxists.

This sounds like CBS will keep sounding the drums of the same information that is already out there:

PART I: Illegal Immigrants only come for the free health care and socials services, I bet they will fail to mention any of the contributions they make and how the math balances out in the end on the favor of the immigrants.

PART II: That is what the public wants to hear we are building a big wall and nobody will get through!! YEAH RIGHT!!!

PART III: This may be the only part that may shot some light as to the need for Immigration reform, but what about the other parts of the economy like high paying skill labor, medical professions. Sounds like just recycling of old news

PART IV: This could be interesting if done some what objectively, kind of hard for Network News to do.

Vick if people do not want farmers to outsource farming to other countries then they should fix things and allow farming companies to get the workers they need here. You forgot something on your list.

Get your butt in gear and compete. If we keep producing morons such as the CEOs of Bears and Stern and Citigrop, morons who built the New Orleans levies and morons who built the Minneapolis Bridge, the jobs deserve to be outsourced. Two of the main reasons why we dont have more skilled people than we should have has nothing to do with job outsourcing. It is due to: (1) unproductive farm subsidies and (2) cuts in education everytime there is a downturn that does away with AP classes in schools. I suggest we remove farm subsides and let the free market take its course.

Ah Marxists..Pat Buchanan, Rep. Steve King, Rep. Dana Rohrbacher..read their statements..sure sounds Marxist to me.

No. But, I knew of one minority American (read in the paper about ten years ago or so) who was pissed off at the US government for not giving him an interview and who got employment in a foreign government and basically worked against the US by getting multinationals to move jobs to the country where he was working. The US government tried to strip him of his citizenship but he countersued for discrimination and the US government backed out..because the agency where he was looking for job was completely white and our government did not want any major problems.
