EXTENSION BILLS ADVANCE IN HOUSE

Rate this Entry

The House Judiciary Committee voted through the four immigration bills I mentioned earlier this week. The bills extended the special immigration religious worker, J-1 physician waiver, EB-5 regional center investor programs and also allow for extensions of P-1 visas beyond five years for athletes.

Any idea how the various Reps voted on this bill?

Why can't they do something about the Schedule A? The 61000 recapture bill can be taken up to get GC's for PT's & nurses who have been waiting for the past 2 yrs. I hope it does come up for voting at the earliest. The wait is getting frustrating for everyone waiting & those already in line.

any ideas if they can add something else like extension of the 245(I)?

They need to abolish Section 214(b) for foreign students.

I completely agree with you George. Most students want to stay and work after graduation. The whole visa interview for F1 applicants is a farce. You've to state that your parents are getting old and you're the only son, you want to do something for your country and all that BS to prove that you don't have immigrant intent.

    Sid:

An Indian national living in India had to show that he had a job awaiting him in Singapore before he was given the student visa to pursue MBA.

Yeah, I also found the logic of the F-1 very twisted. If serious then prevent F1s to do change of status to immigrant visa within the country. Force student to leave and reply for immigrant visa. Otherwise why complain and question in F1 interview immigrant intent years ahead if the law allows change of status within country years down the line.

DOS long ago issued a cable on immigrant intent analysis for students: http://travel.state.gov/visa/laws/telegrams/telegrams_2734.html.

To see the DOS cable on student immigrant intent go to http://travel.state.gov/, then go to the "visas" section, then go to "Laws, Regulation, and Visa Policy Information", then "Visa Policy Telegrams," then "Visa Policy Telegrams 2005," then "Students and Immigrant Intent (09/05)".
