IMMIGRATION LEGISLATION MOVING IN HOUSE?

Rate this Entry

The Associated Press reports that efforts to force the Shuler SAVE enforcement bill may have enough support to force its hearing on the House floor without going through the committee voting process. The highly unusual move is part of an effort by House Republicans to force the anti-immigration measure to be debated before the the November election.

Democrats are considering pushing an alternative package that would contain enforcement measures along with provisions to increase H-2B visa numbers and expedite family immigrant visa processing.

In the mean time, the House Immigration Subcommittee is expected to take up several small immigration bills on Wednesday including bills to extend the EB-5, religious worker and Conrad 30 physician programs.

Greg I guess this is the flip side of the move you thought the dems could make on the GOP. Any traction on that or any thoughts as to how the dems could counter this?

I really do not believe that any immigration legislation will pass this year and chances of passage next year is much stronger if the Dems indeed have at least 55 seats in the Senate.

Sometimes I really do not know what to make of McCain. He said in the Sixty Minutes program two days ago that he is for legalizing illegals under certain conditions. Then he goes to Illinois to support a rabid anti-immigrant candidate Jim Oberweis...of course, I dont know what to make of Steve King either. The man is against John McCain's immigration policies, but ends up endorsing him.
