'That bill, too, ultimately died in the Senate after being branded as amnesty by conservatives and condemned as too punitive by liberals.'

Too punitive how? The cost of a Z-visa? There was liberal opposition specifically to the guest worker portion on egalitarian principles and concerns over what it would do to wages and working conditions. E.g.:

There was also bill opposition from amnesty/pathway proponents who favored more 'family reunification' as opposed to a point system.

A McCain Presidency with 57 Democrats in the Senate will perhaps move us closer to a bill along the lines of one that died in the Senate last year. If it does not, it certainly will by 2011 when Dems might have filibuster proof majority. A Obama Presidency may result in the so-called "amnesty" but it could lead to the wipe out of Dem majorities in the Senate and House in 2010. Right now the best chance for any bill is a McCain Presidency and 57 Democrats in the Senate.

    UNRELATED:

Counties in GA are requiring that Immigrants that are detained for traffic violations abd are placed on hold with a Immigration flag, now have to pay a $10,000 cash bond to get out of jail. Or just wait in jail until their deportation hearing.

Geez. Have to walk around with passports now? I read somewhere, Singapore hands out credit card sized cards with legal status info to immigrants. Maybe US can issue such at POE for a fee.

Sounds reasonable. If people want to avoid the pitfalls of breaking the law - the solution is simple. I think you know what that is. It isn't rocket science.

No problem if all laws are enforced equally. But, Georgia is a racist state...there is no escaping that fact. All GOP congressmen opposed the extension of the Voting Rights Act in 2006. I dont use the R word easily. But, majority of GOP congressmen from Georgia including Nathan Deal and Lynn Westmoreland are racists.

And please dont compare Singapore with Georgia. Singapore is as far away from a racist state as one can get while the US state of Georgia is as clsoe as one can get to a racist state.

Well, when your 20-something niece gets stopped for a DUI and stupidly pretends she is some British girl to avoid her licence suspended, but ends up spending a few weeks in the federal immigration slammer, you will have an opportunity to go back and re-examine what "reasonable" means.

If we implement this idiot's immigration prescriptions, we will end up having a great depression...
