PRAKASH KHATRI RETIRING AS USCIS OMBUDSMAN

Rate this Entry

Prakash Khatri, appointed as the first Ombudsman of USCIS after the agency was created in 2003, is leaving his post to return to the private sector. Khatri has had a tough job in trying to be the people's advocate in dealing with USCIS. Readers of this blog know just how many problems exist at USCIS. But the Ombudsman has succeeded at introducing a number of important ideas, many of which have been implemented. Just last week, for example, USCIS announced that it would adjudicate long overdue cases without completing FBI name checks. That's an idea Mr. Khatri has been pushing and which will bring great relief to a log of people.

Congratulations Prakash on a job well done and good luck as you return to the private sector!

So, how are they gonna select his replacement? Since Ombudsman represents
the immigration community, as a real democracy, immigrants should have a say on it.

    What do you think?

I 'feel' the Ombudsman was kind of forced out of USCIS . You never know what was happening behind the scenes. The recommendations that he made might have made USCIS uncomfortable.

It would be interesting to get the inside scoop on why he is leaving. I'm sure that there are lots of juicy details there.

I doubt there's a story. Staying five years in an appointed position is really quite long.

IS there any plans for a replacement yet? Has anyone been named?

I was disappointed with the Ombudsman because of the "aloof" kind of case handling they demonstrated with my case, although I had evidence to prove it.They need to be more aggressive in pursuing case problems and not just "pass the buck" to USCIS and "hands-off" the case or just close shop and return to their private business like the Indian guy did.It made me believe that Ombudsman and USCIS are one and the same. They are cohorts.
Finally, the USCIS has continued to disappoint the system by displaying embarassingly gross incompetence and tendency to bully and frutrate immigrants forgetting that everyone in the USA is an immigrant directly or indirectly;More power to them, but kama is wide awake and waiting to make them pay.
