Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

HOW TO DESTROY A STATE'S ECONOMY IN JUST A FEW EASY STEPS

Rate this Entry

Lou Dobbs and friends must be cheering. After all, they've sworn up and down that there are plenty of Americans who would love to take the jobs currently being worked by the millions of unauthorized immigrants around the country. Never mind that the estimated number of unauthorized workers probably far exceeds the number of unemployed Americans qualified and interested in taking the jobs (and, no, a laid off mortgage banker is not going to pick tomatoes).

We don't need to talk about this subject in theory. Arizona, Oklahoma, Colorado and other states are providing a real life laboratory. And guess what? The laws of economics still apply (not to mention commons sense).

Oklahoma probably has the most noxious of the new laws. And it's delivering all sorts of lovely dividends to the state. Perhaps the results are best summed up by Republican State Senator Harry Coates:

"You really have to work hard at it to destroy our state's economy, but
we found a way," said state Sen. Harry Coates, the only Republican in
the state Legislature to vote against the immigration law. "We ran off
the workforce."

The quote from the leader of the advocacy group that pushed the bill through that state really tells you what this is all about (in case you thought it was about law and order):

Carol Helm, director of Immigration Reform for Oklahoma Now, says the
Oklahoma law was necessary to stop a burgeoning population of illegal
immigrants from "multiplying faster than the American citizen race"

Does Carol Helm consider the US-citizen children of immigrants a different "race" (whatever that means)?

Better keep the dual citizenship option open for my children. Time to file PIO.

Before you start quoting Sen. Harry Coates, you need to realize he is tied into construction companies. When you factor the amount of money that taxpayers will save on providing benefits to illegals, it far outweights the cost to business.

He is in the elitist class making money off of the slave labor wages of illegal immigrants. Meanwhile, middle class construction workers have to fight wage depression due to the fact that illegals will work for next to nothing.

Do some research before you start quoting this BS. 95% of us dumb Okies are more than happy this Draconian law has passed.

b, she is probably one of those who would like to deny citizenship to children born to immigrants, so she probably literally means "American race", not just citizens.

Yeah, right. And middle-class construction workers are also for that law because they are not tied to construction industry, which apparently got its air cut off. Oh, wait, they are tied to the construction industry, and will suffer just as much as the industry when instead of supervising a team of roofers they will have to get their overweight behind on that roof.

I think, we should give this law a year or two before all the ugliness will come out.

I read just as much into it but wanted to make her statement look stupid by asking a "naive" question.

How about the spill over economic effect that their presence has in the Oklahoma economy, Sales taxes and property taxes paid and the multiplier effect of every dollar spent by this indiciduals. You ough to do your homework and learn economics before you advocate for this ideotic laws.

Show us the numbers from a reputable organization to see your comparison.
