Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

ARIZONA: ANTI-IMMIGRATION GROUND ZERO

Rating: 2 votes, 5.00 average.

As we approach tomorrow's Super Bowl in Phoenix tomorrow, the Wall Street Journal reports on Arizona's growing reputation as the most immigrant unfriendly state in the country. While there business license and English-only laws may now only be seen as part of a larger trend, the latest effort to pass a law barring birth certificates to children born to out of status parents is the jaw dropping clincher. The rule is stunningly unconstitutional. There are progressive thinkers in Arizona. It is, after all, the state that brought us Senator John McCain, the pro-immigration Republican presidential candidate who is now the front runner for the GOP nomination. And Governor Janet Napolitano, often touted as a potential Democratic vice presidential choice, has done her best to temper down the rhetoric and stop even harsher legislation from passing. Nevertheless, the damage to Arizona's reputation and, soon, its economy is really unfortunate for the people of that great state.

There is a significant racist element in Arizona. The people who want to ban birth certificates for babies born to out of status parents..guess what? most of them are anti-abortion..and typical of the so-called pro-lifers, they believe in nurturing the status but killing the baby after it is born!

I am not so sure about this lady Napolitano she signed the anti-immigrant bills into Law even though she was supposedly against them. As far as Arizona paying the price of their own decisions is not going to make anyone lose any sleep.

We shall talk about that after recession takes hold.

They are already starting to pay the price. In predominantly hispanic areas of Phoenix, apartment complexes (especially the ones with affordable rent) are having real trouble filling up vacancies after people (read immigrants) are just leaving the state. Damn oakies are getting a good taste of their own stupidity, but this is just beginning. Wait till sheriff Joe Clownpaio starts going to the business sites because somebody made an anonymous call, not to mention the existing hotline where you can call to turn in your "illegal" neighbors. Even so, things seem to be business as usual. The apartment complex I was living at last month in a Phoenix suburb was doing some remodeling work. As I was emptying my apartment I saw this crew working all over the place. Well, you guessed it, they were all mexican (probably a dozen at least). These people didn't seem to me like the kind that have green cards or even EADs.... hahaha. No matter how much the politicians want to eradicate this problem by an enforcement only approach, they cannot beat the laws of supply and demand, plain and simple. This is reality, one that's impervious to the antis rhetoric.
