ANTI-IMMIGRANTS DEALT MAJOR BLOW WITH MCCAIN WIN IN NEW HAMPSHIRE

Rate this Entry

While the GOP race is still wide open, one thing is clear - the anti-immigration message of Mike Huckabee, Fred Thompson, Mitt Romney, Duncan Hunter and Ron Paul did not resonate with voters enough to get them to change who they supported. Pro-immigration candidates Hilary Clinton and John McCain won the Democratic and Republican primaries.  Exit polls showed that voters did not make immigration their top priority so the expected pay off from trying to make immigration a wedge issue did not happen. The question now is whether voters in other states will send the same message.

Glad someone's saying it! Not enough is said about their failures. We've got a (work in progress) system up now for people to write their newspapers about it:

Obama has just received an endorsement from the Culinary Union. Since, Nevada is a caucus state this virtually guarantees him a victory there. He also has a lock on the black vote in S. Carolina. However, he is likely to lose to Clinton (I would guess that he will lose California, New Jersey and the Empire State to begin with) on the so called Super-Duper Tuesday. My guess is that it will be Clinton v McCain in the Fall. Of course, the best Democratic candidate, John Kerry is not in the race.

With two pro candidates on the Presidential ballot the Pubs are going to lose big time in the House & Senate. The antis should just pack up their tents and leave.

    Right about the antis...

Who would have thought that post NH pundits would be even less certain than they were before.

Obama is the worst president that can happen to legal immigrants. He is worse than Dick Durbin when it comes to Legal skilled immigration , He toes the Communist Union line when it comes to legal skilled immigration.

"Obama is the worst president that can happen to legal immigrants."

Hardly. Obama would be the best President for legal immigrants. He went Mano-a-Mano with Lindsey Graham to try and get the repugnant point system scrapped. He is a strong proponent of FB immigration and is for eliminating the backlog. Here is how NumbersUSA rates him:

    http://www.betterimmigration.com/candidates/2006/prez08_dem1.html

NumbersUSA rates his Senate records thus:

FB Immigration F- (meaning he gets an A+ from us)
EB Immigration F (meaning he gets an A from us)

    http://grades.betterimmigration.com/testgrades.php3?District=IL&VIPID=1162

When it comes to the worst President, as far as immigration reform is concerned it would have to be Hunter, Huckabee, Thomson, Romney or Giulini (based on his campaign statements not his record).

I was unpleasantly surprised that so many voters care about immigration at all. I mean there are no immigrants in New Hampshire, what are these guys are so worried about? This does not look good...

It's anti-ILLEGAL-immigration, not anti-immigration. I'm a firm believer that we should let in anyone who wants to immigrate to the US, provided they are willing to come legally. I don't believe in immigration quotas or limits.

I'm not sure that any of the current repub candidates have ever said they opposed LEGAL immigrants. You should correct that intentionally misleading phrase.

He is very good for Family based and illegal immigrants but not for Employment based immigration. He is a typical union guy.

You are obviously ignorant about the whole immigration debate from your statements. No need to corerect the statement as everyone here knows well where the republicans stand on immigration.

Statements by these candidates during the primaries are generally playing to their base meaning to the extreme right or left depending which one you like. On the general election they will all have to moderate their positions on most topics or flip-flop from their current position.

He is a typical union guy, yet Wall Street loves him. Republicans are friends of the EB immigrants, yet the last positive move on EB immigration was during Clinton administration. Republicans spent 6 years in full majority and that of course helped the EB immigrants a bunch - not!

How many times need Republicans throw us under the bus to become clear they are no frinds of ours?... Why are you so mesmorized by the Sessions of the world - "oh, look, they like us more than illegals, they just don't want to hurt us"? No, they hate us a little bitty less than the illegals, but not enough to tolerate us, let alone help us. That should have been long clear.

So that means it should be easy for you to find a quote that justifies Greg writing that certain republican candidates are "anti-immigration" instead of "anti-ILLEGAL-immigration".

Take your time, there must be like, thousands of these types of comments. Because surely someone wouldn't be stupid enough to write this without being able to justify it, right?

    Right?

  14. Legal and no longer waiting's Avatar
Tman, read the blog - there is mounts of evidence that most Republican candidates never supported legal immigration, and some of them, like Tancredo, love talking about restricting legal immigration just about as much as about deporting illegal immigrants.

    Legal,

Sorry, but if it's that easy, could you post any single statement by any of the "anti's" listed by Greg that state that they are "ANTI-IMMIGRATION"?

I am not defending the folks who want to curtail legal immigration, but I think it's unfair to label all republican candidates as "anti-LEGAL-immigration" when it simply isn't true.

At least Mitt Romney was saying he is for more legal skilled immigration in the debate other day.

Ofcourse I would not trust him just because he said that. He said so many things in the past and now he opposes them so .....

So someone who doesn't want to increase legal immigration is anti-immigrant? Anyone who thinks that the US can decide to set and/or change limits on legal immigration to this country is anti-immigrant? I thought attorneys were articulate and precise in their use of language.

You can call them patriots are protectors of americans dressed in american flag. Do you want me to call Duncan Hunter and Tom Tancredo friends of immigrants lady?

Anti runs out of funds, teeters on the ropes:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/10/us/politics/10campaign.html?hp

"Mr. Romney dropped his television advertising in two other important battlegrounds, South Carolina and Florida, to focus his spending on Michigan in hopes of averting another major defeat."

A loss in Michigan will take him out!

Incidentally, to those who are unaware, the Pubs have sanctioned Florida, Michigan, S. Carolina, New Hampshire & Wyoming for holding their primaries prior to Super-Duper Tuesday. 50% of the delegates from these States will not be seated.

Similarly, the Dems have sanctioned Michigan and Florida and none of their delegates will be seated.

    Of course, this could change.

Take off the blinders there is tons of evidence just in this blog that just because republicans say they ar for "LEGAL Immigration" is just another way to excuse their anti imkigrant position for all immigrants regardless of their status. That is just a way for the to Hipocritically hide behind this position. These republicans speak for themselves you are just stupid enough not to see it.
