KINSLEY: LET'S NOT KID OURSELVES

Rate this Entry

Michael Kinsley calls those to the carpet who say the immigration debate in this country is about following the law. It's not. It's about immigration, plain and simple.

My only complaint about the article is that it is black-and-white-ish. The reality is that most people approve immigration at some level (such as foreign adoption or spouses), but things get more complex with EB immigration or with bringing non-immediate relatives. Even Mr. Kinsley is not ready to "open the borders" as he acknowledges. And the divide is fundamental.
In most people's minds allowing foreign adoption or spouses is a basic human right. On the other end of the spectrum, new EB immigrants benefit some businesses and probably hurts some others. Whether it is beneficial overall is not so clear: if it, is why would not we just "open the borders" and let the market sort this out...like let's bring 50M asian immigrants in 5 years and see what happens. So there has to be a line drawn somewhere. Where exactly is debatable..
