SHOCKING NEWS: LATINO IMMIGRANTS ASSIMILATE JUST LIKE PREVIOUS IMMIGRANTS

Rating: 2 votes, 5.00 average.

This would be filed in my "no, duh" reference file except for the fact that today's antis repeat what every previous generation of antis has said - immigrants in the past (including my ancestors) were great and helped build this country, but today's immigrants are too different and are ruining America.

I'm not sure why this is news. The second and third generation Latinos obviously go to schools where English is the primary language for teaching. Why wouldn't they learn how to speak English?

Most of the arguments are based on the fact that the first generation Latinos are not able to assimilate well. Compare that to Indians, Europeans or even Chinese immigrants (if English is the only criteria for measuring the degree of assimilation).

A lot of the objection to illegal immigration is due to the fact that a social underclass (economically) is being created that's not getting the same opportunities as other immigrants who are coming in - the highly-skilled immigrants for example. That's leading to a lot of repressed anger among the unskilled/undocumented community. Eventually, that will explode and lead to racial tensions in some areas, similar to what's happening in France and the U.K. right now. I live in the Bay Area and I can see the income inequality and difference in lifestyles first hand. The kids of these people are US citizens so they are not going anywhere. If we simply deport the parents, these kids will grow up in foster homes or some relatives' home. Legalizing the parents would help them move up the ladder so that they can provide better opportunities for their kids. Having said that, we cannot continue to allow illegal immigration in such high numbers or else we should be prepared to deal with the same issues that some of the European countries are dealing with.

I think most of the undocumented from latin america have much more in common with americans compared to "highly skilled" from India or China in terms of values, religion and food.

These people assimilate just like immigrants from all over the world have done throughout history in the US. But I guess this will fly in the face of the English only folks!!!

To those who are interested in having a meaningful discussion, I think language is the biggest factor in binding a country together. If people know more than one language, well and good - have two official languages.

Being from India, I have a better understanding of the effects of not enforcing one (or more) common language. It is acknowledged by most that separating regions into states based on the spoken language instead of administrative ease during the Indian independence has lead to a lot of the current problems. Till now, English is the official language of India because people in the southern region would not accept Hindi as the national language (and rightfully so). I would be harder for me to move to a small place in Tamil Nadu (where Tamil is the primary language) than to a small town in Iowa.

For a long time, this has hindered growth in the smaller towns. Obviously, people are going to be reluctant to pursue employment opportunities in places that are not very cosmopolitan. Had there been a uniform language throughout, the smaller towns would have been in a better position to take advantage of the current boom. Instead, the population in the major cosmopolitan areas is exploding, leading to a lot of strain on the existing infrastructure. This is going to be one of factors that would limit the economic growth in India.

only voice has only one voice. that the hispanic undocumented are most needy and must get green cards now. the rest can go to hell. and the fact that most of them don't even speak english is irrelevant. they are still assimilated and have much in common with the majority caucasian euro-rooted country. this person will make any argument to support that one point. so maybe it's not worth responding?

food??? now mexican food is american? what is american food anyway? there are as many chinese eateries here as mexican...
this is such bs. sorry for your illegal status bud, glad you are hard working and other crap. but no one is getting instant gratification here. and in case you have not noticed most of the problems are because a vocal anti immigrant minority is drumming up fears that central american immigrants are "not like them"

"what is american food anyway? "

Exactly. The U.S. is too diverse to pigeonhole things like religion, food and values. Statistics will tell you that more than 70% of Americans are Christians but what it doesn't tell you is that beyond the bible belt, many of these Christians never go to church and their idea of Christmas is hitting the outlet malls during the holiday season and getting drunk on X-mas eve. BTW, even I do that and I'm not a Christian.

For administrative ease and assimilation, language is the biggest uniting factor for any country. You're not likely to hang around with people you can't speak to, beyond the point where you're forced to.

Technically, Only Voice is correct. Since Mexico is America's neighbor. There has been a lot more cross-cultural exchange between the two countries than from countries like India and China. Ever wonder why salsa gets more sales than ketchup? That border isn't a super forcefield separating the two cultures you know.

But, Chinese immigration has been going on for well over a century and the cause of anti-immigrant hysteria in the 1920's. Chop Suey, for instance, was invented here in the US.

All groups do "assimilate" into US society and no one group can say that they assimilate more than others. Again, Greg was saying that Latinos aren't any different than other immigrants but some here refuse to believe that.

On another topic, it is impossible for first generation immigrants to fully assimilate into the US; having grown up in a foreign country prevents that. The most interesting sub-group, in my opinion, is the 1.5 generation of immigrants, children who were born in another country but were brought up in the US.

Oh and on the topic of European immigrants. The UK and France only have half a million undocumented immigrants each, a miniscule amount of their total population. Compare that with 12 million here in the US. The people who riot in the French banlieues are French citizens and children of legal immigrants who feel that France does not heed their concerns.

Exactly , Mexicans or latin american should be treated with special provision by U.S immigration because it is in the interest of U.S.A to do so.

Most of the Indian or chinese are not practicing christians compared to people coming from Mexico or latin america.

You've hit the nail on the head without even realizing it. The main reason is that the border is porous and the fence jumpers are able to enter in large numbers and bring in their families. Indians and Chinese do not have that option. You think that there wouldn't be an equal number Indians, Chinese and Africans (not African Americans, who are already here), if Mexico didn't have a monopoly over illegal immigration due to it's geographical advantage? It has nothing to do with cross-cultural exchange.

That's why I've mentioned before that Latinos have plenty to worry about if illegal immigration is curtailed and a guest worker program created. I think the smarter Latino leaders know that which is why they are pushing for legalization more than creating a guest worker program and giving temporary work visas to the current illegals.

Any guest worker program created by U.S.A should give priority to workers from Mexico and latin america if U.S.A serious about reducing the illegal immigration.

No, the reason salsa (or ane Mexican food/drink/holiday) is popular is because this country was not just founded by Anlos. it is because almost half of this country was conquered by the Spanish way back whan, and Hispanics lived there long before Anglos arrived. Do you think cities like Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Jose were founded by Anglos?

"Most of the Indian or chinese are not practicing christians compared to people coming from Mexico or latin america."

Oh yes. There are a lot of Americans who are practicing Christians, including many celebrities. You know, like Britney Spears who decided to practice by getting married in a Las Vegas chapel - a marriage that lasted all of 55 hours. Just remember that when the statistics come out, they include people like her under practicing Christians.

Include San Francisco too .. Most of the south west U.S.A was controlled by Mexico before U.S.A Mexico war.

Sid, there are way more legal Hispanics than there are undocumented ones. But I don't think we're arguing about the same thing, though. Cross Cultural exchange just happens because of the fact that America and Mexico are neighbors.

Also, Mexico does not have a "monopoly" on illegal immigration although they do contain the highest amount of undocumented people. NPR had a good article on the make up of the undocumented population. Half of the 12 million undocumented are from Mexico while the rest come from other parts of the world. I wish I could find that article.

Yes, you're right. I'm not referring to the Spanish who came here hundreds of years ago. I don't think you can even differentiate them now from the Anglo descendents in terms of appearance and culture.

You're right. Monopoly would imply 100% or close to that. The technically correct term would be "dominant" as in a dominant firm in an oligopoly.
