SPITZER DROPS LICENSE PLAN

Rate this Entry

It was a valiant effort by the New York Governor to stand up for the safety of his state's citizens and also send a message that the xenophobia sweeping the country needs to be fought. But Spitzer announced yesterday that his plan was doomed to failure because of opposition from the state legislature. According to the Times:

"You have perhaps seen me struggle with it because I thought we had
a principled decision, and it's not necessarily easy to back away from
trying to move a debate forward," he [Spitzer] said.

But he came to
believe the proposal would ultimately be blocked, he said, either by
legal challenges, a vote by the Legislature to deny financing for the
Department of Motor Vehicles or a refusal by upstate county clerks to
carry it out.

No breaks on Immigration, its sad to see that Xenophobia is winning all battles no matter what the issue is. Their new slogan should be "The US a nation that does not welcome Immigrants anymore"

It is another feather in America's downward cap :-).

There are many things happening around ..Nothing seems to be on positive side..

Yes, unfortunately it is true, the US is no longer an immigrant friendly country...

It is absurd that anyone expects our country to grant drivers licenses to people who aren't here legally.

If any of us went to another country, illegally, and started making demands for government services we would, at best, be laughed at. Most likely we would be chucked in jail.

Shame on anyone who says our country isn't welcoming of immigrants. We have more immigrants than any other nation. Unfortunately some people are wearing out the welcome mat because they don't go through proper channels.

I know, I'm only saying this because I hate immigrants, watch Lou Dobbs, blah blah blah.

It is really shame on hypocrites like Senator Dodd from Connecticut. This is the same senator who apparently does not have any problem with legalization of illegals and granting citizenship but he has an issue when a governor suggests issuance of driving licenses.

I think citizenship is a higher privilege than driving license.

"It is absurd that anyone expects our country to grant drivers licenses to people who aren't here legally."

What is absurd is that people want to keep blinders on when it comes to immigration. These people are here and are not going anywhere and further more are driving because like it or not are part of this society. It is better that we know that they can drive, know the traffic laws governing each state and can purchase insurance to cover everyone outthere.

"If any of us went to another country, illegally, and started making demands for government services"

We are talking about a reality and factual evidence in the US not other countries. And I am sure these people would pay the government fees associated with DL just like anyone else so we would not really be providing a service without the payment of its implied costs. NO FREE LUNCH

"Shame on anyone who says our country isn't welcoming of immigrants."

Read the headlines lately or a news paper?? this is highly queestionable.

"We have more immigrants than any other nation. Unfortunately some people are wearing out the welcome mat because they don't go through proper channels."

Your statement shows that you are very ignorant when it comes to immigration!!

You are either a newby to this blog or buy big time the antis baloney. Let me clearify what has been done in this blog millions of times. There NO WAY for these people to come here through the so call"proper channels" the current immigration system does not work for people like them. If they are to come through the proper channels then the system requires reform. Politically there does not seem to be the will to do it. Never the less you have to be practical rather than stupid when you tackle the problem at the local level or State level.

Until the law grants them some legal status, they should not be granted drivers licenses. They are a part of our society, yes. An illegal part of our society.

Should some people be given legal status? I think they should. But another reality is that Congress isn't going to touch this issue any time soon. We can't put our laws on hold for two years.

People took a gamble coming here illegally. We all know what happens to gamblers. Most of them lose. Sorry, but it looks like they lost their bet. If they are driving a car without a license, I hope they are headed south.

Does not change the fact that they are here and driving!!

Tell that to the poeple that get injured in an accident and then there is no insurance to cover them becuase WE decided to GAMBLE with this issue rather than to let people buy insurance and be certain that they can drive and know driving laws. May be they shoud send you their medical bills.

Licenses and Immigration are related yet affect different parts of society and accidents happen everyday, just open a newspaper. OHHHH I forgot you only watch Lou Dobbs!!! Try the newspaper sometime!!

As sympathatic as I am to the undocumented people , I am not sure if this kind of argument helps the cause. In most of the states its unlawful to drive a vehicle without adequate insurance or proper license. If an illegal driver with out insurance injures someone he should be the paying the bills not someone else.

Exactly which means that we must all pay a premium because they do not want to give these people a license to drive. So it cost us all more in our insurance bill because we all have to buy uninsured motorist insurance.

Its hard to predict what someone's damages will be in an accident they may be an amount that any regular person will not be able to cover which is why you have insurance in the first place. It is EASIER to let everyone get a license and we would all save on Insurance(no UM) and can be sure that everyone out there that drives can get it as well. In addition you know who they are which seems important in this day and age. We can just ask for a passport from their native countries to be sure that it is the right person if is good enough for the airport it ought to be good enough for the DMV.

I don't know any illegals so here's my question to you - How many illegals who jumped the border have a passport? Is it fairly common? I'm not challenging your view, just curious.

Or we can lobby for an affidavit instead of a passport.

That's just what we need. More lobbying. So you want people to sign a piece of paper asserting that they are who they say they are? And we are to just believe them?

That is so funny. You must be joking.

Let me enlighten your ignorance my friend, any forign national can go to its nearest consulate or embassy and request that they issue them a Passport.

Keeping people safe on the road and everyone insured does not relate to Immigration unless you make that a requirement. I prefer to keep everyone safe out there until the federal government can get their act together as to Immigration. Its just common sense.
