NURSING IMMIGRATION AMENDMENT COULD COME UP IN THE NEXT HOUR

Rate this Entry

I have learned that SA 3404 will get a vote this afternoon, possibly in the next hour. Nurses do not have access to a non-immigrant visa and the EB backlog means they must wait five years or more to enter the country. We have a severe nursing shortage in the US and recent studies link patient mortality rates to this shortage. The bill will provide temporary relief by making 61,000 green cards available to RNs. The bill number is SA3404 and is being offered as an amendment to the Labor-HHS appropriations bill. If you can call your Senator NOW, you might be able to make a difference in the bill passing. The phone numbers for each Senator are here.

Greg: Are you aware of SA 3442 which has some EB provisions also attached to it? Is there anyway it will also be amended to the bill. Pl. let me know.

Even if the amendment is approved, the bill is to be Vetoed by the President as it runs over the spending limit. So nurses are back to square 1...

The spending bill has to pass. If the nursing amendment is attached, the spending bill has to be signed by Bush sooner or later.

Bush wants more money for IRAQ, not for Labor and Health....

Another amendment that doesn't belong in a war spending bill. Absurd.

MG - It's a bill to fund the Department of Health and Human Services. I'd say there is a connection.

It is my information that SA3404 will pass this evening. Both sides have agreed.

My bad - thought it was war spending. So it is a health and human services issue because of the shortage. OK - I get the connection.

Another solution is to make the H-1b visa a health sector visa only. I know how bad the health sector needs those workers, so I'm really pulling for them. I hope they get every last H-1b visa.

Greg, are you aware of SA 3442? Any comments please? Why are there no provisions in there for EB, at least for recapturing wasted visa numbers? Haven't we been lobbying hard and loud for this? 150 lawmaker meetings in one day and nothing. Does anyone know if recapture for the nurses will reduce the EB2/3 backlog?

Do you have any idea when the DREAM act might come up for a vote on the floor or did it made yet to the conference.

Foreigh born nurses now represent approximately 30-40% of American nurses. Monopoly capitalism is responsible for the same. Monopoly capitalism wishes to maximize short term profits and control the nursing labor market through the massive immigration into the USA of foreign nurses. The end result will and has been an extreme and continuing shortage of nurses. Monopoly capitalism togeather with the continuing discrimination against men in nursing is responsible for the nursing shortage. End monopoly capitalism, which destroys the rewards and incentives for becoming a nurse and continuing in nursing, and give men protection against discrimination in employment in nursing. The cause of the nursing shortage will therefore be addressed and both the quality and quantity of nurses will increase such that the nursing shortage will end.

We should not be pessimistic. All we need to do now is pray and be optimistic. Pres. Bush will sign it. I'm positive. They need nurses now...
