WELCOME TO THEIR WORLD

Rate this Entry

NY Times reporter Julia Preston, one of the best immigration reporters in the country, covers the

increasing delays in reentry of US citizens at land ports of entry in Mexico. Most Americans have no idea what immigrants encounter everyday when dealing with US immigration authorities and if there is any good news here, it is that awareness of the problem will increase.

Remember the Singapore immigration authority's slogan I mentioned this week - 3S - Security, Speed, Service. We too need a system that delivers all three of these.

I just want to share my bad exprience at one of the mexican post.
I went to get my visa from the metamoros consulate. after visa stamping, i went to the border post to get the I94 permit. stood in the long line- about 4.5 hours from 1pm . Even after 5:30 none was looking at my passports. kids were getting upset. so i went to the counter asking to find out what's happening with the processing. Nothing.
nobody touched my passports. Ofcourse I could see more than 50 mexicans sitting silently(patiently) in the room - the guys processing the applications were doing a lazy job. they sat on the chair for less time and spent more on moving around and chatting. there were only two officers processing all this 50, it looked like.
so I lost my temper and asked the officer at the counter that I could talk to their manager about this slow process. guess what one of the processing officers didnt like my attitude.

he came around and told me it could take for ever and they have a process to follow. he also indicated to me that I am a guest to HIS country and can't demand quicker processing. Ofcourse he was a hispanic guy. when he looked at my face and told me that i was so pissed off and wanted to complain. but was wiser(i guess) kept silent. he gave me my passports with a rude look after 1 hour.
i recently heard a story at shusterman site that one border security officer remarked bad about a doctor which dearly cost a doctor's 485 stuck in name check line for about 8 years. the agent wasnt happy hence he wrote something in the record and it came up in the name check scrutining.

these guys are misusing the system and the security protocol. poor immigrant. it *****.....

thank god i didnt yell at him for his poor performance, altho i was thinking If i do a job at the same speed i will be fired the next day.Now i know why all those ppl waiting there were silent and never raised their voice.... they knew better.

These are the most Powerful bureaucrats when it comes to let in you in or deciding the faith of your visa. Very scary people, it all depends in their mood as scary as that sounds. It seems like they all fit the same profile maybe is just part of their training or a hell stepping stone in their government career that they are all trying to be done with no matter the consequences to other people.
