JINDAL BECOMES HIGHEST ELECTED INDIAN-AMERICAN

Rate this Entry

Bobby Jindal, the American-born child of Indian immigrants, has easily won the Louisiana Governor race. Jindal is a conservative Republican known for his enthusiastic support of the war in Iraq and his opposition to abortion. On immigration issues, he has generally voted to support tough immigration enforcement legislation. He has had the opportunity to vote a few times on business immigration bills and his votes on those issues were pro-immigration. He also apparently has changed his view on the REAL ID drivers license bill having voted for it initially and then voting later to fund it. A number of Republicans have recently pulled their support for the initiative that would require state drivers license to meet certain requirements that would effectively bar unlawfully present immigrants from obtaining a ilcense.

An enthusiastic supporter of the war? What an idiot.

The citizens of Louisana also voted to re-elect Congressman Jefferson - who was caught with $90,000 in his freezer and now facing corruption charges.

That state seems to have a very high concentration of suckers. One's born every day, I guess.

Either one can be American OR Indian. What this Indian-American animal is? At least Indians would not recognize. Are Americans ready to recognize it?

Jindal's parents were originally from India.
He is second generation and makes him no different than any other 2nd/3rd generation Italians, Germans, Poles etc. etc.
I am sure a lot of second or third generation Americans of foreign heritage have been elected to office.
As for his views and voting record, they are generally not very pro immigrant.
From what I gather he hasn't been very helpful on the hill as a US Congressman.

I don't dislike him because of his ethnicity. I dislike him because he's a fool.

I think this guy is going to try to hard to be accepted as avanilla floavor republican. I would not count him as an ally in immigration because that is not going to get him accepted by the republicans. I think he is going to try too hard not to be a son of an Immigrant.

Let's not forget that they also elected Vitter, another loser & hypocrite.

I don't understand how Jindal's political views can be so extreme and outdated despite his excellent academic background - Oxford degree, Rhodes scholar, etc.
He is pro-war, anti-abortion, anti-evolution theory, etc. In spite of that the Indian news sites are super excited about his win just because his parents were Indian.

He is a modern day Republican.

The Chaffee's, the Justice Souter's, the Justice Stevens', the Alan Greenspan's are no longer welcome in this party.

It's the classic "he's one of us so he must be good". Hitler was part Jewish and we all know how that worked out for the Jews.

Hopefully he won't be la Vitter anti-Immigration but pro-washington madam!!!

MG - Just to set the record straight. There is no evidence that Hitler was even 1% Jewish. There are some who have tried to make such a claim because Hitler was illegitimate and did not know the identity of father. But I otherwise agree with the sentiment that just because someone is a member of an ethnic group does not mean the person advocates policies in that group's interest. Same for people who claim to be innoculated from charges of being anti-immigrant because they are either an immigrant themselves or are related to an immigrant. Words and actions are more important than heritage or family relationships.

I guess this is another subject for another blog, but I rarely hear the argument challenged - even though (I have no reason not to believe you) there is a lack of evidence.

If you are right, then it is amazing how the "Hitler was (part) Jewish" theory has become accepted as fact. Most people probably aren't too interested in researching the topic given the sensitivities and all, but that's probably one thing about Hitler that should be corrected. Of course that doesn't change history or the gravity of what occured.

Similar to what is occuring in Darfur. If only our troops weren't in Iraq chasing WMD that don't exist - they could be fighting the holocaust of OUR generation.
