JUAN GOMEZ APPEALS DIRECTLY FOR YOUR HELP

Rate this Entry

I've been publicizing this young man's story and the broader need to pass the DREAM Act. Juan has written a letter to Immigrants List appealing for help in pressing the case in Congress. Please read Juan's letter and send an email to your member of Congress by following the link in the letter. The anti-immigrants are hard at work on the other side so your help is especially needed.

Dear Immigrants' List Members,

Support the Dream Act

In the upcoming months there may come a chance for a
pro-immigrant piece of legislation. Specifically, this legislation is called the
DREAM Act. For those who don't know what it is, the DREAM Act would give
conditional residence to undocumented students. The requirements
include:

  • They must have been in the US for 5 consecutive
    years

  • They must have arrived before the age of 16

  • The must have a high school diploma or
    GED

  • They must demonstrate good moral
    character.

While this Act would only apply to students, it can serve as a
powerful springboard for further immigration reform. Many of these students
arrived at a very young age and have thus inherited an undocumented status. They
need your help in contacting Senators and Representatives.

To send an
email to your Representatives go to: http://www.immigrantslist.org/dream

Please do your part
in helping these immigrant youth better their futures and this country. Ask the
congressmen/women to support the DREAM Act and co-sponsor it as well.

Sincerely,

Juan Gomez with Act on a Dream

Juan Gomez came to the US on a visa as a one-year-old. When
his parents' application for political asylum was denied in 2003, the family
stayed. Juan took 15 advanced-placement courses in high school, graduating 14th
in a class of 800.
He planned on attended college this fall, working
two jobs to help pay tuition.
In July, Juan &
his family were arrested. Since then, Juan, his brother & friends have
fought to pass the DREAM Act for the 65,000 other undocumented kids who graduate
from high school each year.

I sympathize with Juan Gomez and strongly feel that the Dream act should be passed at the earliest. We should also include the children of the Legal Immigrants also in the DREAM act as they also go through the same predicament and age out due to the inordinate delays in the immigration process .

Congress has to pass it, at least give us that. If they dont, then truly I will have lost faith in this country and congress.

It's hard to support DREAM act in the current form as it's discriminatory to the kids of legal immigrants - who have/will be aging out of their parents petitions.

It's hard to support the law changes which punish legal behavior, and reward breaking the law. If this *intentional* discrimination is ended, act may draw broader support.

WD - i think it isn't hard for the government to make actions on the issues of aging kids of legal immigrants... as long as their parents did some actions for their respective kids before, i'm sure. Then maybe some of their kids' applic just kept & hanged there in the USCIS waiting for the right time to make actions on their papers. As compared to the situations of the kids born abroad who brought them here illegally or overstayed in the US by their parents. There's really a need for the government to address this problem bec most of the target victims here are innocent in nature.
