AMERICA'S MOST ANTI-IMMIGRANT PAPER APOPLECTIC OVER FRED THOMPSON RECORD

Rate this Entry

Well it was just a matter of time. Remember a few weeks back when I told you that despite his current rhetoric, almost Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson had a decent record on immigration when he was my US Senator back in the 90s? Apparently, the Washington Times has started to look into his immigration votes and is now freaking out. What's interesting to me is that a number of Republican candidates have secret pro-immigration pasts. Sam Brownback and John McCain have been two of the leading pro-immigration voices in the Republican Party. Rudy Guiliani? His actions as mayor were as pro-immigration as any big city mayor in America. Romney? As governor of liberal Massachusetts, he took a very moderate tone on immigration issues. And Chuck Hegel, if he runs, has a superb immigration record. So it is all the more amusing that they are tripping over each other to prove who is toughest on immigration. The assumption that the Republican base is that rabidly anti-immigrant is simply not supported by the polling and the candidate that realizes this and stakes out a more moderate position may just find themselves being rewarded for doing so.

Thompson was on Leno yesterday announcing his run. I had to turn him off, he was giving me heartburn. He was so cliche and uninteresting, I think he is going to end up 5th in polls in a matter of weeks.

Thompson was attacked pretty much everywhere on immigration yesterday & today for getting a "C" from NumbersUSA. But on his YouTube message on the issue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8AL7zMMTB4) he says Comprehensive Immigration Reform is not the answer, that we need to secure our borders first, and that Congress needs to explain how a bill that puts illegal immigrants at the front of the line isn't amnesty. Romney & Giuliani are also being attacked for being too pro-immigration, despite messages in their campaign to the contrary (though Giuliani's record in New York was more pro-immigration).

The comments on articles about Thompson like this one http://marcambinder.theatlantic.com/archives/2007/09/thompsons_rebuttal_on_immigration_overlooks_c_grade.php seem to be complaints that he hasn't endorsed a plan to deport all illegal immigrants.

Eventually candidates from both parties will tire of trying gain the support the hard line anti-immigration minority because there really seems to be no pragmatic policy that will please them.

This guy Thompson is going to follow the Bush strategy be vague and generalist on everything and hope that his TV character plays well with voters. Please who said that Illegal Immigrants where going to the front of the line they are going to no line nobody wants to deal with them. "we need to secure our borders" that is the favorite line of republican candidates. Pretty much means I will not do anything on Immigration.

Another Voice: Definitely agree that thus far he has been a generalist on the topic. His YouTube video seems to list of people's complaints, but doesn't really say anything about what his solution is.

In no way endorsing what he's saying, jut incredible that he's being attacked by anti-immigration groups given what he's said.

Can't imagine why people on this Blog who supposedly fought extremely hard to get here the right way, would be so pro illegals, so pro giving them a free ride. Hooray for Thompson! Hooray for securing the borders! It has nothing to do with being Rep. or Dem. It has everything to do with being fair, just and respectful of existing laws. I don't personally know of any professional going through the nightmare immigration process that agrees with this open borders and legalizing illegals. I'm wondering what kind of people are posting here.

a, maybe because people on this forum who did a lot to be legal understand how difficult it is, recognize that not everyone is as fortunate as they are, and have enough empathy not to spit on the less fortunate. There are, of course, those who would strangle another person over a place in a checkout line, even if that person is waaay behind them.

"Legal and waiting' - Your comments are way off base. At least keep the personal stuff out so we can have a cogent discussion. Nobody is fighting or being abusive or suggestive of that. Laws are laws. Every civilization or civilized society has to have order. If there weren't any laws, or if all laws were blatantly abused or ignored, we would have social meltdown, anarchy and chaos. If you're educated you would understand the rationale today and historically across the world. Keep the emotion out please.

Its called realistic and practical considering all that is involved in resolving this situation. The round them up and send them back aproach is favor by all idiots like you who can analyze the issue realistically. Pleanty of ways like CIR tried and failed to fix this remaining problem and it was no free ride.

a2007" Hooray for Thompson! Hooray for securing the borders! It has nothing to do with being Rep. or Dem. It has everything to do with being fair, just and respectful of existing laws."

It has nothing to do with being respectfull of existing laws it has to do with a broken immigration system that does not give these people a chance to come here legally like other immigrants yet these are people in need that need to feed their families and want a better life. It has to do with supply and demand economics. it has nothing to do with your simplistic and idiotic aproach at viewing and analyzing this matter. Please by all means vote for this idiot if you like, vote is all yours.

12 Million illegal immigrants do not all hold professional jobs a lot is hard manual labor jobs you would not even begin to undrerstand how hard life they have if you think going through the immigration process is hell. You are the typical immigrant that wants to blame your misfortunes on the people that have no voice and all the problems. People that write here are people that are obtaining valuable immigration information and have a view on the current system and situation of the immigration system ohh and idiots like you.

We'll I hope that after taking you to school on this matter you have better postings it gets old for all of us to argue with idiots like you and take them to school everytime. Get over your Immigrant fobia if you were not an immigrant you would be in the anti camp yourself.

a2007, you obviously do not think outsite of your own little world to realize that it's virtually impossible for an unskilled worker to come into this country legally. You probably also have not been in a sitution where you cannot put food on the table for your family. Yes, most of us here have gone through or currently going through the legal channels, but at the same time, the stress of going through the legal channels has not made us blind to the plight of those less fortunate then us.

I personally know a lot of immigrants who have immigrated here legally, most of them on EB visas, in professional categories, and I have yet to meet someone who thinks like you on the issue of illegal immigration. Thank God for the fact that majority of immigrants realize the fact that legal and illegal immigration is one and the same, and we have one common enemy. It's only the close minded folks like you who can't see past your own USCIS frustration to relize that people who hate immigrants do not differenciate between legal and illegal immigrants.

a, Rosa Parks blatantly abused and ignored the law. Thank God there are people who can rise agaist stupid laws!

a, by the way, there is a difference betweem being smart and being educated. If you were smart, you would understand that true harmonious order can only arise from anarchy and haos. Examples would include market economy vs planned economy, democracy vs absolute power. Start thinking about the rules instead of blindly following them, it really helps.

Excellent point, sometimes some laws don't make sense in the real world, perhaps because they are outdated and no longer apply to reality as it is today. Very true indeed, if everybody were like this idiot that can only "follow" the law then these laws would never change. Yes, history proves that it takes chaos to fix what's wrong. Some people are just no capable of questioning what's imposed to them, namely the uneducated masses that have been successfully brainwashed by the controlled media. Laws are not perfect and are not set in stone. If you find that millions of people have to break a law and at the same time the economy benefits from it, then it doesn't take a rocket scientist to infer that something has got to change, plain and f#*@ing simple.

Legal and waiting - The difference in our thinking is that I am outright anti-illegals, always have been, always will be. We have lots of problems in Europe, especially UK. We have tightened the laws there due to illegals similar in education levels as what we face here. No economic chaos will happen. You are the guys who are brainwashed by the media. We will survive without the illegals with a min, education who can't speak English and get all the benefits including drying up the social security fund. I'd check out some of the studies if I were you, and not those by Latino backed groups either. We don't need socialism. Even Europe is moving away from socialism, or were you not aware of recent elections? We don't need people who feel entitlement. That is not America.

a2007, stop comparing every thing in the US to the problems you had in the UK, this is not UK period. The reason this country is so great is because it has always been tolarant and welcoming of all kinds of immigrants, educated, and uneducated. It does'nt matter what the UK is doing with it's illegals or what any other country is doing, this country was founded by immigrants, yes and those immigrants did not always come in through the legal channels, and they did not always know the english language, so I suggest you do your own research first before coming here and comparing everything to UK. As far as the undocumented being a drain on social security, please back such comments with hard facts and site some resources, or else don't bother.

a2007: where does fixing the Immigration system turns America into socialism???? Vast majority of research shows that there is an actual surplus when you compare what the Illegal Immgrants put in and what they take out of the system. This is not French style Immigration these people actually work and that is all they are asking to do to have documents to work and feed their families. They take out of the system ER sytem and education no other benefits becuase they are prevented from doing so. SS fund actually grows at 7 billion dollars a year from un match SS numbers that is presumed to be contributions from this immigrants. Fund now stands at $100 billion dollars just sitting in a government bak account collecting interest and based on the language of CIR government does not intend to give this immigrants credit for such contributions if they ever solve their situation(Does taxation with out representation ring a bell to you). So please man take your britsh racism back to the UK and do not come here with your stupid arguments you have none.

That is unwarranted. Labelling an entire nation as racist, is in of itself racist. If you had any decency you would be ashamed of yourself.

I never said that the whole nation was racist I said that this individulal who himself claimed to be british and proud himself on the way the UK deals with undocumented immigrants was racist. So I am clearing things up but certaintly not apology needed.
