IMMIGRANTS OF THE DAY - LOU DOBBS' COLLEAGUES - JOURNALISTS

Rate this Entry

Tonight I was working out and my gym was showing CNN on a monitor. Lou Dobbs' nightly rant was showing and I didn't need to actually hear the first story to be appalled. Just the title was enough. I could tell from the video that the story was on Elvira Arellano and her speaking out to the Mexican parliament regarding the US government's deportation of her. Dobb's title for the story - "Mexico's Chutzpah."

Chutzpah is a Yiddish term and there's a bit of irony in the xenophobic Dobbs show using the term. First, it means audacity, gumption, nerve, etc. It often refers to someone who does something wrong and is non-apologetic about it. Which described Dobbs to a tee. Here was a guy who built his career as a business reporter, but then was washed up in the ratings. So he re-invented himself as a populist to get ratings and acts every night like he's had these beliefs all his life.

There is also irony in choosing a Yiddish word at all. Yiddish is a language created by Jewish immigrants in central and eastern Europe and is a mixture of German, Hebrew and other languages. It was the first language of millions of Jewish immigrants to the United States at the turn of the last century. And the people who used the language were constantly attacked for their failure to learn English and speak it as their primary language.  If you could transport yourself to the Lower East Side in New York 100 years ago, you would have seen Yiddish signs everywhere and heard Yiddish all around you. It was the Spanish of its day.

My other favorite thing about tonight's broadcast, by the way, was the poll at the end. Dobbs usually runs an unscientific viewer poll that is ridiculously biased in the way it is worded. And the people who are in to this show enough to bother to respond are the hardcore anti-immigrants. So the polls usually reflect results that would have made Saddam Hussein blush.

Tonight's question: "Are you outraged that the Mexican Senate supports Elvira Arellano's
claim that the United States is to blame for her deportation?" The response: 94% yes, 6% no. And the results are like this every night.

It's embarrassing. CNN used to be all about being the leading broadcast journalism organization in the country. And then it started to get whooped in the ratings by Fox and it's opinion shows. So CNN decided to blur all the lines of what is journalism and run Dobbs' nightly propaganda show. Any CNN reporter who appears on this show should really be ashamed of themselves.

Anyway, a few weeks back I started paying attention to who I was seeing
on CNN everyday and started to notice a lot of folks that appeared to
be immigrants. And I thought - "How ironic?" CNN  runs the most
anti-immigrant news show on television, hosted by Mr. Dobbs. If Mr.
Dobbs really kept to his rhetoric, why is he not railing against these
immigrant job stealers?. Based on his views, shouldn't CNN insist on
hiring only American-born journalists? I feel bad for these
journalists. They probably have to be very careful about criticizing
Dobbs lest they risk the wrath of the big CNN ratings leader.

So I've decided to honor 14 CNN reporters who are part of CNN's American network and have to put up with Mr. Dobbs. There may be more, but here are folks that I've confirmed were born in other countries. They need our pity -

Christiane Amanpour - British/Iranian

Guillermo Arduino - Argentina

Matthew Chance - England

Kiran Chetry - Nepal

Michael Holmes - Australia

Lola Martinez - Spain

Octavia Nasr - Lebanon

Paula Newton - Canada

Betty Nguyen - Vietnam

Atika Shubert - Indonesia

Abbi Tatton - England

Ali Velshi - Canada

Zain Verjee - Kenya/India

Michael Ware - Australia

Harris Whitbeck - Guatemala

Rick Sanchez - Cuba

Thanks for the culture lesson about the meaning of "Chutzpah" yesterday I saw the show and I was wondering the same.

By the way did you know that Mr Dobbs wife is from Argentina? she arrived to the US some time during the 70s. They live with her parents in New Jersey. And Mss Dobbs sponsored her parents to come to the US.

Mr. Jeff Sessions would say Dobbs family caused chain immigration...

Well said Greg. But you know what his answer is. He is only against illegal immigration, after all he has a Mexican American wife and he can't be against legal immigration. BTW see if you can find out how many H1Bs are working in CNN and its parent company. We may be surprised.

Chances are I am being paranoid, but I feel a bit uneasy when someone posts a list of immigrants. I know you have good intentions but there are all kinds of crazy people out there, and those on the list might suffer some harm, such as hate mail etc. Personally I would not want to appear on such a list.

guyfromsg - Lou may say he's against illegal immigration only, but he's run story after story railing against the H-1B, the L-1 and a variety of other legal immigration categories. The claim is that they're taking American jobs and hurting the middle class. He goes a lot further than other anti-immigrants.

Lou Dobbs panders to racists. Politicians also pander to racists, even though working is not a crime. Adultery is a crime within this country, but you'll never hear "enforce our laws" when it comes to that from Lou or others. I believe it's punishable by a life sentence in Michigan. Other states have different punishments. Dobb's is full of hypocrisy, pretending he doesn't see foreign journalists working at CNN is just another example.

    hmm, yes, chances are.

Come on now! Adultery is not a crime and if in some backwards states it was in the past, this is not something to be proud of. There is nothing worse than trying to legislate morality.

You forgot Aneesh Raman, the CNN reporter who reports from dangerous war zones.
This is Hindu name but he might have been born in the US. But there is an excellent chance that his parents came from India on H1B.

About Loony Dubbs every day tirade he is the most hate-filled liar I've ever come across in the media.

Great piece...back to Dobbs in kind.
Another Name : Dr. Sanjay Gupta , Indian

Sanjay Gupta is not actually an immigrant. He was born in Pennsylvania. As for Aneesh Raman, I think the issue was confirming he was born outside the US. There were several people I didn't list because I couldn't confirm.

I think everyone is missing the point. CNN is an international news station, so it's not unusual to have foregin born journalists on its team. Furthermore, all those stated in Greg's article are not immigrants, such as Christiane Amanpour who resides in the UK and others, are legal immigrants. THis has nothing to do with those who are against illegals and who do not respect the laws of the U.S. because they simply think the border is non- existent.

I deliberately took off most of the folks that just report for CNN International. Amanpour is actually a naturalized US citizen and married to Jamie Rubin, Clinton's old DOS spokesperson. She reports from all over the world, but she is an American immigrant nonetheless. Most of the ones on the list are based in the US, by the way.

As far as I'm concerned, Dobbs is just a protectionist pure and simple. He has been a broken record on the subject for years. I can't believe anyway could watch him over a long period of time because he is just a blow hard that says the same thing over and over and over again. Doesn't that get monotonous?

His anti-immigration views fit in nicely with his protectionist outlook.

Ironically, immigration is one thing that helps to keep the U.S. competitive in the new global economy, and hurts our competitors as they lose their best and brightest. I wouldn't expect a windbag like him to stop talking long enough to even think about that fact.

This post is like a garden of logical fallacies. We can start with the huge differences between what's happening 100 years ago and now. Surely, if he works at it Siskind can be intellectually honest to think of at least a few of those differences, right?

As for CNN, this is the type of "journalism" I'm sure Siskind would prefer: youtube.com/watch?v=Zsm1JoC_Nfg

Why didn't Wolfie mention, for just one example, this:

I wasn't saying we should try to legislate morality. But it is on the books in approx. 20 states. Our immigration laws are antiquated. Yet all you hear is the mindless repeating of "enforce our laws." The nativist groups say you don't get to pick and choose which laws you want enforced. Just pointing out the hypocrisy.

I guess the fight against ad dollars is bigger than Journalism integrity. Media is a business so they do have to worry about this but never the less I think it brings down the reputation of CNN as a reputable news source when they have people like Dobbs on the air. After all how much can 30 or 60 minutes of programing can bring in ad dollars for them. They should get rid of this guy.

    Sorry for the double post.
Time Warner is big company. I wonder how many who aren't citizens or permanent residents work there. Lou is an extremist, but he'll never go after time warner.
