OUTRAGE OF THE DAY: AUSTRIAN INTERNS AT US HOLOCAUST MUSEUMS DENIED VISAS

Rate this Entry

It seems like it usally only takes me just five minutes or so to find a new daily outrage. Today was no different.

The NY Times is reporting on how the Department of State is protecting us from a truly threatening group:

Since 1992, the Austrian government, which requires 18-year-old men
to serve one year in the military, has offered a select few the chance
to participate in the program. Known as Gedenkdienst in German, the
program allows the young men to volunteer in institutions around the
world that are focused on Holocaust remembrance or studies. (The
Austrian government pays them a small stipend for living expenses.)

Of
the roughly 40,000 Austrians who are of draft age each year, 30,000 do
the military service, 10,000 perform civic services and 25 are accepted
into a Holocaust remembrance program, about 5 of them a year in the
United States, said Wolfgang Renezeder, a spokesman for the Austrian
Embassy in Washington.

Ooh, watch out. These young people on a mission to learn about tolerance and end genocide MUST be stopped. According to the Times, several museums around the US have had problems getting cultural exchange visas for their interns because DOS does not consider these cultural exchanges to be "legitimate."  Yeah, the Austrian Government, which underwrites this program and provides the stipends that ensure that the interns don't have to burden US taxpayers, is pretty shady and is really just a quasi-smuggling operation.  And to add icing to the cake, when the Austrian government sought help from the US when designing the program, they were advised to pursue this cultural exchange visa strategy. Gimme a break!!

" A small stipend." Don't see anything about health insurance. And, apparently, Austrians are still killing Jews. WWII was about 57 years ago. How desparate can you be? No Americans can work there? Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton need some lessons in tolerance. Just ask those falsely accused in the Twana Brawly case and the Duke Lacrosse case.
