SPECTER: HOW ABOUT CIR-LITE?

Rate this Entry

A few weeks ago I mentioned that Arlen Specter was promoting another go at comprehensive immigration reform less the ambitious legalization program. He tried to kick that effort in to higher gear this morning with a column in the Washington Post.

The plan would allow the undocumented "fugitive" class (as Specter refers to these folks) to get permanent residency, but not be eligible for citizenship. They would be eligible only after leaving the US and seeking reentry through normal channels or Congress can revisit the question later when the borders are secure.

I'm skeptical we'll see anything because no compromise on legalizing the undocumented is acceptable the NumbersUSA types. The only thing they will accept is outright deportation of all undocumented immigrants and a complete moratorium on all future immigration. Obviously, these are reasonable folks.

And the pro-immigration community has its hardliners as well who will not be happy unless ever single person has a path to citizenship with virtually no penalties.

But Specter is to be commended for continuing to try. It's a pretty thankless job. Unfortunately, I don't believe a compromise is possible until the number of pro-immigration Senators jumps by another five or six.

Undocumented "fugitive"? Like, as in a "fugitive" who forgot his documents, or as in "fugitive from justice"? I'm not sure if this term is really that good.

I do not think this will get any wheels it seems too water down for pro-immigration advocates and it will still be amnesty for the Lou Dobbs crowd. I think is best to waith for the next congress and president. I would not get any hopes on this one they are not going to squeeze it in the legislative calendar.

If they are going to touch the undocumented/illegal aliens and it's not starving them to death, rounding them up , killing them by exposure because nobody will rent them apartments or lynching, then it's Amnesty, anything short of dehumanizing is Amnesty to the anti-immigrants, so forget about it.
