Let's hope that their next attempt is better than the last one. Kennedy et al agreed to eviserate the EB, FB and Diversity categories in return for a partial clearing of the backlog (they picked an arbitrary cut-off date of May 1, 2005 for those who would be cleared) and a path to citizenship for the illegals. However, the path to citizenship was merely a mirage. Many (not all) of the illegals here are landscapers, restaurant workers etc. How on Earth would they have managed to get the 55 points required to qualify for a GC? So, they gave up a lot for a path which was not really a path!!

Even, NYC's billionaire mayor was ashamed of what the Senators had agreed on!

    Greg,

Can you please shed some light on Schumer's nursing amendment that he proposed and than withdrew last week. Any chance it will be re-proposed or passed ? I would appreaciate your comment on it.

ALL ENFORCEMENT Amendments keep passing with no problemsbut nobody deals with the 12 million problem. Are the Dems really in power or the Republican are still running the show? I guess we'll have more racisim on the way and people suffering before anyone in Washington decides to deal with the 12 million HUMANS in this situation.

AC - We think we're going to see the amendment come up again in the next week or so possibly on a different appropriations bill.

Greg, here's another one from Romney, here he is speaking in front of a conservative crowd, wanting to replace each illegal with a legal or a citizen. Are any of his opponents going to call him on this major flip-flop? He drives me nuts. Its not his position that drives me nuts, its the fact that he is such an hypocrite, saying one thing to a Hispanic crowd and then another to a conservative one.

Romney, "I want to replace illegal immigrants with legal ones or even our citizens who want to work," he said. "I like the fact that people want to come here."

Yeah right he likes the fact that people come here.....as long as they look, walk and talk like him, he likes them.

time legal workers made them live up to their words- or eat them! from IV, the next step:

    Announcement:

Immigration Voice will hold a rally and gathering in Washington DC on Sept 13th 2007.

Immigration Voice will be doing a huge rally of 10,000 plus members in Washington DC on September 13th. The route and timing will be announced shortly.

Every member must participate on Sept 13th in this rally in DC. Congress will be back from August recess in early September and there will be a fresh look at smaller pieces of immigration related issues, including high-skills immigration.

After having favorable consequences from the flower campaign and the San Jose rally, it is now time to have a big event in the front-yard of congress in Washington DC, so that the long ignored issue of visa backlogs (retrogression) is addressed. This event will be hugely consequential as it will get much more coverage in media and much more attention of congress because of 2 reasons: It will be a really big crowd and secondly, it will be in Washington DC. Immigration Voice will arrange for permits from the metropolitan police and other authorities and we will also arrange for banners. All you have to do is show up.

Please plan to take a day off on September 13th to attend this event. If you do not live within the driving distance of DC, then there is ample time for you to book travel by air or by train ahead of time. 13th September is Thursday and if you book your travel and accommodation ahead of time (and there is plenty of time still) then you can participate with minimal expense.

Immigration Voice wants to do something as consequential as the flower campaign and the San Jose rally but only this time, it will be much bigger and much more consequential aimed at congressional action on visa backlogs and broken system of high-skills immigration. We aim to resolve this issue but we cannot do it alone and therefore it is imperative for every one, and by that we mean EVERY ONE to show up. If you wanted to be a part of San Jose rally but couldn't, then now is your chance to protest peacefully and fight for a fair system and just process.

Always remember, we are in United States at the invitation of our employers and our employers have filed our green card petitions in order to retain us. It is only fair and only just to ask for a system that achieves that objective without delays and without putting the immigrants in probationary limbo for 6-12 years. And it is your obligation to yourself and your family to stand up for your rights and ask congress to legislate and fix the system so that it works the way it was originally intended to work. Just ask a participant of San Jose rally of how proud and how satisfied everyone was after the rally - not just due to impact - but just because they have stood up and spoken up for their issue.

Please stay tuned for more updates about the route, times and other updates. In the meantime, please plan to travel with friends and family and let your friends know about this event. If you plan to carpool with local IV members, or book travel or hotel reservation in groups for group discount, please go here : http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=90

Greg, you say "AC - We think we're going to see the amendment come up again in the next week or so possibly on a different appropriations bill."

I sure hope you are right about this. If they don't do something to address the nursing shortage, AND they force hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care facilities to verify the status of employees to get Medicare funds, this is just a potential disaster. This could throw the whole medical system into turmoil resulting, in the worst case, in deaths from medication errors or lack or appropriate care.

They need to be realistic about doing enforcement.

I think they got up to 1 point for each year of work (max 15) & 1 point for each year (max 5) that they owned their house. They also got 5 points for having medical insurance for their family. That is 25 points right there. This was very generous given that these people are law breakers.

    John:

    "these people"

Or those people as Jon Kyl referred to them on the floor of the Senate.

Assuming bill had passed, INS would have written the regulations in 2008, in 2018 Zs buys house, in 2023 after working 15 years Zs buys insurance. Sure, he gets 25 points. Then out of 47 for education, 15 for native speaker of English, 28 for education and 10 for having a US citizen or GC relative he would have to scrape up another 30 points.

Now the questions for you are:

    a) What percentage of US citizens own a house?
    b) What percentage of US citizens work in STEM?
    c) What percentage of US citizens have a college degree?
    d) What percentage of US citizens own health insurance?
    e) What percentage of US citizens work 15 years without being laid off or losing their job?
    f) What percentage of South Americans are native speakers of English? Okay, okay lets be fair (after all we are the Senate) you can take the TOEFL.

[I"VE DELETED THIS TERM BECAUSE IT USES THE TERM "ANCHOR BABIES" WHICH, IN MY OPINION, HAS BECOME A HATE TERM - GREG]
  11. TX's Avatar
Greg, thank you for deleting. I bet you half the time these people don't even know that a "baby" needs to be 21 years old before they can even sponsor their parent. This term is in fact an insult and hate word to me, a parent of a US born daughter, I did not have her for the sole purpose of gaining US residency. You would think that these same people who claim to be compassionate conservatives would realize the value of family and not use such hate words.

not taking sides here on the z visas or anything but i do want to set the 55 point stuff straight. the bill alloted an additional GC allocation equal to the number of Z visas starting after 8 years, and divided equally over the next 5 years. so if there are 11 million Z visa holders, there were 2.2 million GC's for them a year for 5 years. so, despite the smoke screen, they did not have to compete in the points system. their GC were guaranteed after 8 years on an unrestricted EAD. now, i want to be clear- i am all for relief and help for these 11 million undocumented workers. i also do not support the formation and continuance of a permanent underclass. I do question though if EB applicants were given anything remotely like this guarantee of green cards. Non STEM workers from retrogressed India were actually guaranteed never to get a green card thanks to the country quota that crowned the so called "merit system".
my frustration is not at the workers who were benefiting, it's at the duplicity of the senators who mouth pithy phrases about the rule of the law.
