HOW TO CONTACT YOUR SENATOR ABOUT THE REID AMENDMENT

Rate this Entry

You can find your Senator's phone, fax and email information at www.senate.gov.

The message is simple and here's some quick text:

"Dear ___________:

Please SUPPORT the Reid side-by-side
amendment on AgJobs and Dream Act and
OPPOSE the Graham amendment."

It only takes
a moment and according to Hill Staffers, it counts.

Thanks for
your time."

Greg, my feeling is that AgJobs plus enforcement might have passed but adding the DREAM act might be too much for some of the Republican Senators. Undoubtedly, CBA will be invoked on both amendments. So, Graham & Reid both might strike out. From their past record, NY Senators Clinton & Schumer will support the side by side.

The Graham amendment has just bitten the dust as non-germane. It couldn't even get a simple majority to over-rule the Chair! Good point of order by Reid!
  3. USC's Avatar
Reid is working on a unanimous consent request to agree to just the funding part of the Graham amendment, per his floor statement.

DREAM is troublesome because it will take too much resources to verify all requirements and besides there isn't a very big difference between legalizing everybody or everybody who entered the country under a certain age. It calls for even stronger punishment for those parents who drag their children here illegally and endanger them. It's true children shouldn't be held accountable for parents actions so there must be a law to protect them from prosecution... but citizenship - isn't that too big award for them? May be give them F-1 or H-1 visas... or some other legal status and let them wait on the queue with all legal immigrants. If they find employer willing to sponser them, then great! The system should be streamlined. If not, it will be perceived as amnesty and will always fail.

Isn't DREAM just giving them eligibility for a green card?

    Greg,
can you give us an update on that? What`s happen?
I can`t beleive about the Jail provision.
    I hope that it`s failed.

Legal and Waiting - maybe true. I don't know all the details about the DREAM act but it seems very suspicious. It doesn't clarify what status they'll be on - conditional green card or what? And under what admissibility category? You know, the devil's in the details. Are they going to wait for 10 or 20 years to get the green card, or go in front of the queue before all those people who wait since 1985 in the family categories?

The requirements are also very ambiguous. One is for sure - they have the option to enlist in the armed forces and get the green card. But I think this has always been true. Any foreigner who enlists in armed forces and serves get automatically green-card. Correct me if wrong.

The other option for them is to go to college. But does it require them to complete the degree? Cause you know, if they just enroll in community college for a couple of weeks, get certificate/letter of enrollment, and later drop all clases and withdraw (getting 80% of tuition back) - that's a different story.

I think some people are going to see DREAM act as good idea becasue they believe most Latinos won't be able to make it to college (see statistics about scholastic achievement), and they'll end up in the armed forces. This will help army meet recruiting goals and such. But it doesn't seem very ethical to me either. It's one thing to have racial or socio-economic imbalance in the armed forces, and other to "lure" foreigners to fight and die for your country in droves.

It's very bad these issues aren't debated with all their consequences, but people tend to simplify debate to knee-jerk anti-immigrant reactions.

Well, knowledge is power. Please educate yourself before taking an opinion.

"Any foreigner who enlists in armed forces and serves get automatically green-card. Correct me if wrong."
You absolutely are wrong. If that were true, US already would have had at least 5 million people signing up.

"The other option for them is to go to college."
Most of them are in college already, despite being illegal, and it's not helping htem a single bit to gain any status. They are inadmissible, therefore cannot change/adjust to ANY status.

Again - EDUCATE YOURSELF before stating your opinions so boldly. They is a lot of ignorance in your assumptions.

Cornyn kills unanimous consent request for border security money. Cornyn wanted to allocate the border security money to also deport the illegals with a deportation order against them. This was unacceptable to Reid who wanted to use the Graham language and restrict the money just to border security.

So what's the grand total of immigration bills passed this year by senate? Zero, zilch, zip, Nada? Man, this is getting ridiculous. If people are relying on them for anything, don't hold your breath.

Can't the house do something? Obviously the senate is hopelessly deadlocked on everything to do with immigration,
  11. Legal and waiting's Avatar
Limbo, I think we need to send more requests from ordinary citizens and non-citizens. My opinion is these requests need to be well argumented, not just a requests to vote this or that way. We should highlite that NumbersUSA are liers and have no argument whatsoever, to make sure their requests are given less weight since they come from people intentionally misled by these organizations.

Legal and Waiting - I see you're having trouble understanding what I said but that's not very surprising. The bigger problem is you're not contributing anything to the discussion either, except for a knee-jerk reaction response "I'm teh smart! Y'all need edicatin'!" I'm not going to bother to respond.

Roll call vote to sustain the ruling of the Chair:

    http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=110&session=1&vote=00277

A yes vote was a vote against the Graham amendement. Greg had recommended a vote against the Graham amendment. So, round one to the pros!
  14. Beppe's Avatar
    so the amandement failed?

Thanks USC for updating folks. Just getting back online and monitoring C-SPAN 2.

fred, I am sorry I did not say what you wanted to hear, but this is a blog, not an immigration law class. I cannot teach you all of the complexity of the immigration law in one message, but can only highlite that your opinion is based on multiple assumpltions that are wrong. Again, please educate yourself before making conclusions.

Schumer has just proposed amendment #2448 to re-capture 61,000 numbers and give them to Nurses amd Physical Therapists. I don't know if there is more to this amendment and if there is relief for the other EB categories. Greg, probably knows more about that!
  18. Beppe's Avatar
thank Greg for all your help.
Let me know if there is any light for the 245(i).
I already called the senators and representive. Let`s see.
  19. Legal and waiting's Avatar
Let's keep out fingers crossed for nurses and therapists...
  20. Legal and waiting's Avatar
Greg, could you give us information when SKIL bill is going to be up for vote? I need a few days to send requests out and rally the troops (well, more like a SWAT team, small but determined).
