Greg Siskind on Immigration Law and Policy

BUT THEY ARE COMING HERE JUST TO GET OUR WELFARE...

Rate this Entry

The Washington Post reports that a law that went in to effect a year ago to make it impossible for illegal aliens to qualify for Medicaid has had virtually no impact on Medicaid enrollment. Why? Because illegal immigrants do NOT come here for the public benefits. They come to work. Contrary to what groups like FAIR or NumbersUSA say, people don't risk their lives crossing deserts or being smuggled in container holds on 18-wheeler trucks just so they can get public benefits in the US.

It's a very interesting topic. I think the root casue is the problematic immigration systems, but look at what happend here now: no matter who and when there is critism on the immigration system, somebodies, say, some institutionalized guys or the beneficients of the current system, will drive the public attention to the 11 million illegal immigrants, which make nothing can be done. Since solving it is painful, lets just pretend it's not here.

They do use services though, like hospitals. My wife is an RN in Phoenix. The hospital is a charity hospital and has a large number patients who are illegal immigrants, either with no insurance, or with insurance from the state of Arizona, which pays much less than the hospitals actual cost. Believe me, they do put a huge strain on the system, and the costs are recouped from others who pay inflated prices for everything. The financial burden put on hospitals means that cannot afford to hire some of the specialists and other staff they need, which puts a big strain on the staff they do have. Many hospitals in border areas have been forced to shut down due to this problem, limiting access to those who are here legally.

Obviously we need some kind of guest worker program so that people can come here legally where it is shown there is a need (agricultural jobs come to mind), and once this is in place, immigration laws need to be enforced effectively.

This is weird. Why this politicians support illegal immigrants by providing all this benefits like medicaid, food stamps,etc.. and talks bad about legal immigrants despite of paying taxes, helping the economy.

    Limbo,

    1. You do not provide any statistics around how many of them actually pay (at least something) for the services. Saying 'illegal immigrants use hospitals' is like saying 'illegal immigrants eat food' - of course, they do. The question is how we make sure every memeber of the society gets access to medical care and medical profession gets paid at the same time. So, unless you are willing to watch a child die in the waiting room (and remember, some of them will die before you have time to find out their status), you cannot advocate turning them away.

    2. 'Illegal' of itself is hardly the problem here. Even if you are able to accomplish the unimaginable - and every illegal construction, hospitality, and agricultural worker is replaced by a US citizen - you have not change the pressure on the hospitals at all. The people who put roof and pick food need medical care whether they are citizens or not! Will the US citizen this these professions majically all have medical insurance? Not nearly. Many more will be on Medicaid, thet's for sure (so, you will still pay for their care). According to statistics, US citizens in that income group are 5 times as likely to criminals - so you will have a lot more gunshot wounds and drug overdose coming into hospitals. The pressure will still be there, and the taxpayers will still have to pay.

The bottom line is - someone who picks your lettuce needs to have medical care, or you will get e.coli infection sooner or later. It does not matter, if this person legal or not, but you, the buyer of lettuce, will pay for that care - through higher price (if you make employers provide insurance), or through taxes (Medicare), or through higher medical cost for your family (to compensate for losses associated with sick people who cannot pay). There is just no way around it.

It looks like some of the posters did not read the article at all.

Read again: "Twenty-two of those states reported enrollment declines, the GAO said yesterday. Most said the decline was due to delays in coverage or loss of coverage for eligible >>>citizens

We also must take in cosideration taxes that are paid by illegal immigrants that go to the governments(federal, State and Local) to fund much of the social services like hospitals. The Social Security fund has about $100 billion dollars of unclaimed money presummed to have been paid by illegal immigrants and keeps growing everyyear by a rapid pace. When you balance those things out I think you will find out that they either pay for their share of the services they use or even come out ahead we are talking payroll tax, sales tax, property taxes and Federal taxes paid through Tax Id numbers if you times that by the 12 million illegal immigrants I think you can come up with some serious money.

    L&W,

My only point really is that if we are to be honest with ourselves, there are negatives associated with illegal immigration, and it is a mistake to approach the subject with rose-colored glasses, as it is to approach any subject in that way. FWIW, I advocate a generous guest worker program where employers who benefit can pay into a fund somehow to insure them for basic health care benefits. Of course workers could be screened for contagious diseases, as other legal immigrants are.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't think the effects of illegal immigration on the health care system are even that controversial. Here is an article from the Journal of the American Physicians and Surgeons. Apologies to Greg in regards to the inflammatory language it contains in places, including terms he has asked us to refrain from using on this blog. I think it is worth a read, however, as it does have a lot of stats and the author appears to be expert in this area (she is an attorney in the area of medicine and health care).

One point the article brings up is children born to illegal immigrants are citizens by birth, and wouldn't show up in the stats. Another interesting point is that this is another case where the feds mandate that money should be spent (treating emergency patients) but don't give a dime to fund it. Perhaps some of that $100 billion Soc. Sec. fund should be given to hospitals to make up the shortfall. I am only raising these issues to further the discussion so that we can look at all sides of the arguments.

Limbo, and may I ask you, where is the other side's arguments? When you talk about negatives of illegal immigration (hey, there is negatives in almost ANYTHING) you bever bring up positives. Like, medical costs are associated will illagal IN COMPARISON to that of... I dunno, costs of treating obesity, which is most prevalent in citizens? Yes, illegal immigrants come with health costs (they are humans aren't they), but are those costs higher that an average American? The answer - no, actually times lower. Yes, illegal immigrants commit crimes, but is their criminality rate higher than that of an average American - no, it is several times lower. When you say that X amount of dollars from SS will be spent on illegal immigrans care, you forgot to mention how many billion dollars are paid every year into the same coffers on non-existent social security numebers that are almost exclusively used by illegal immigrants (I think it is $10B annually). When you talk about cost of birth to new US citizens born to illegal parents, you forget to mention that 40 years from now children of immigrants will be contributing 25% of that social security check you will be getting, with 'anchor babies' share around 10%. The demographic situation in this country is lopsided, with high percentage of older people and growing, but anti-immigrant side refuses to recognize how desperately this country needs those same 'anchor babies'.

That's balanced debate, not just confirming 'how much it costs'.

So are you advocating for a few million or billion dollars more you want to encourage law breakers? Free money sounds good but how about security? How about the fact that there are hundreds of thousands of people who are waiting in the line legally to get some benefits and yet paying taxes and other things. Never mind the fact that they dont get the benefits if they dont become residents or citizens. Do you realize that close to 50Bill $ goes out of USA to the home countries of illegals? If you just want to quote money how abt this
The present govt is spending close to
$446,580,477,680 last i checked few minutes ago
    check here: http://www.nationalpriorities.org/Cost-of-War/Cost-of-War-6.html

so dont you think we would be better off if we spent 25% of that money on the border security, pushing back illegals and preventing/closing off the entry points. For all you know there might be many criminals who might have used the same path..
