DOESN'T THIS COUNCILMAN KNOW HE'S INVITING ICE RAIDS?

Rate this Entry

It's one thing to take on those nice Yalies in New Haven. But does Julie Myers know who she's messing with when she takes on New Yorkers?

A city councilman in New York is proposing a city identification card that would be a valid photo identification document and which would be available to all New Yorkers regardless of immigration status. Pretty much the same thing New Haven rolled out a few weeks back. Two days after New Haven introduced those cards, ICE staged mass arrests in the little city. Retaliation? ICE denies it, but come on...

Expect to see this low level war of wills to increase and further divide the country while Congress twiddles its collective thumbs.

Is this ever going to be resolved? I mean, it seems Congress will never come to an agreement on the illegal immigration issue. So, let's say next time, new president and new Congress, they fail again to agree on a bill, antagonizing even more the two distinct groups thus perpetuating the vicious cycle... years and years will go by while hatred increases more and more and people are more divided... God bless America! God bless the inept congressmen! Yes, now I can see why this is the best country in the world!

What this proves is that the federal government needs to once and for all address this issue - not local governments.

It really boils down to anarchy - one local government will crack down while another will provide safe haven. That's no way to implement federal immigration law.

I think there are some very limited things local government can do (revoking licensing of businesses who have violated federal laws) but there is definitely a line that can't be crossed. The problem is that nobody will ever agree where that line is.

Greg will probably argue that cracking down on businesses with revoked licensing crosses that line. So there you have it - no matter what side of the fence you are on we probably all agree that the federal government needs to take charge here. Otherwise this issue never goes away.

I'll bet the Supreme Court decides this one before Congress acts.

"revoking licensing of businesses who have violated federal laws"

Out here in the Big Apple, unlike in places like Arizona, Alabama etc., we do more than pay lip service to the free market system, we actually believe in it and hence we do not set much store on "business licenses." There are only a very, very limited categories of businesses which require a business license, see link below:

    http://www.nyc.gov/html/dca/html/licenses/applications.shtml

So, if you are a software developer, operator of shopping centers, retail store etc etc you do not require a business license. Hence, the revoking business license strategy won't work in NYC.

NYC already issues library cards to one and all. Their ID and address verification methods prior to issuing the ID card are very through. A library card these days is not a popular form of acceptable ID because it does not bear a picture or state the DOB. However, back in the early 1980s, a NYS Drivers License did not have a picture ID either and most businesses back then were happy to accept either form of ID. Of course, back then you were seldom asked for ID!

I am going to propose an unconventional thing - maybe this country SHOULD start regulating immigration on the loval level. Canada has Quebeque immigration program that is not federal. I live in a state with declining population - and if given opportunity, I coupld totally see this state inviting good hardworking people over and giving them documents. Same is true for many small towns bleeding population to big cities. I am sure, seeing the impact of population growth and development it brings is one of the best proofs that immigrants are good for this country.
