IMMIGRANT OF THE DAY: PETER DOHERTY - NOBEL PRIZE WINNER IN MEDICINE

Rate this Entry

In my hometown of Memphis, a lot of people don't know we have a Nobel Prize winner on the faculty of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and who also conducts research at the world famous St. Jude Children's Hospital. Peter Doherty won the 1996 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his research on T Cells and how they recognize their target antigens. Doherty is an Australian and recently became a naturalized US citizen.

Maybe these profiles can inspire people to support the Dream Act which would enable many immigrant children to contribute to this country in their own unique way. Greg, what do you think will happen with the Dream Act?.....do you think Durbin will be able to attach it to the (must-pass) defense authorization bill? Thanks for you input.

Greg I think you are awesome! I will keep reading this list and come up with suggestions if I can.

All pro-immigration legislation is tough to get passed these days, but the DREAM Act has a better chance than other bills because it has so much bipartisan support and the traditional anti-immigration arguments often don't apply to the affected community of immigrants.

    Greg:

How about Andy Grove? He came here at the age of 21. If you read the Wikepedia link below you will note that he was "non-degreed" (earned his BSc f-in 1960 fro CUNY) and wouldn't have qualified under H1b or even EB3. I hope he is he not too famous for inclusion in your list? Without him Intel wouldn't have happened and without Intel there would be no PC or the modern day Internet!!

I'm sure he'll be listed soon. I believe he also came as a refugee with HIAS sponsorship after his family fled Hitler.

Thank you for the news item on one of our many distinguished faculty members. You may, however, wish to make note that the name of our statewide education and research institution is the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. That's "science" singular, not "sciences" plural. Thank you again for your story.
