CAMPAIGN '08: ROMNEY SLAMS ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION AND THEN ASKS FOR HISPANIC VOTE

Rate this Entry

Umm...ain't gonna happen. Mitt, if you want to make immigration your wedge issue and bash your opponents (such as Rudy Giuliani or John McCain) for not being cruel enough on the treatment of illegal immigration, you're delusional if you think America's Hispanic community is going to embrace you. They're no fools and they know if you peel a layer or two away from the typical immigration hardliner, you'll find someone who thinks we have too many Hispanics in America. There's a reason why only one in ten Hispanic Americans identify as a Republican (and most of them are South Florida Cubans who have traditionally supported Republicans because of their anti-communism history).

This is a new low for Flip Romney! Thinks he is too clever.

How did this guy make millions?? I have never seen a bigger idiot. Either Romney thinks that no one will notice his major about face every time he faces a Hispanic audience or he thinks that Hispanics are just stupid and will not notice what he's trying to do. If by any chance he wins the nomination, and I do believe that he might, how does he think he will defend this kind of a flip-flop in the national election? This is amazing. What is more amazing is none of the leading candidates are calling him out on this. What's up with that?

Another new low for Republicans......Just head a major radio talk show host, Mike Ghallagar, defend a listner idea that we should put land mines on the US-Mexico border. Maybe someone should call and bring up a more humane idea, like concentration camps at the border...oh how Hitler must be turning in his grave knowing that some in the US are trying to outdo him and his extermination tactics.

Greg, how could this kind of talk be allowed on public radio?....these guys are actually defending the idea of killing people.

    History repeats?
I remember Pete Wilson's 1994 campaign for CA governor. He ran a scare campaign against illegal immigration.
    The result?
After his election, lots and lots of Hispanics naturalized and registered to vote. And guess who they voted for? Certainly not Republicans (the current CA governor is an exception, since he is Republican in name only...)
Rep. Loretta Sanchez, for example, directly benefited from this. She won her seat in a heavily Latino district against "B1"-Bob Dornan.

Saying that only one in ten of Hispanic voters identifies as Republican is a bit misleading. The story says "Including independents who "lean" to one party or the other, Democrats lead Republicans among Hispanics 58% to 20%". That's 3 to 1, bad, but not as bad as 9 to 1.

It would be a mixed blessing for Democrats to get such a huge wave of votes from Hispanics as they tend to be very traditional, family oriented Christian people, especially on social issues. This will keep the party from drifting to the left or promoting secular liberal values too strongly, and may ultimately lead to a split in the Democratic party with the Soros, Move-on crowd becoming impatient and looking to a Ralph Nader type of alternative.

Be careful what you wish for.

As a Hispanic and I believe the sentiment is Universal in the community Republicans time after time show that they are not interested in diversity and people like us. Just on principal they are not getting any votes from Hispanics they may manage to keep the Cuban vote but they are in the minority within the Hispanic community. Unfortunatly Hispanics do not vote much unless someone organizes them well and makes a strong get out the vote push, Republicans won't be afected much by their declining numbers amongst hispanics. But its tough to win the White House without the Hispanic vote these days so they have the work cut out for them not to be the anti-Hispanic party in 08.
