CHEERS TO AILA, AILF AND IMMIGRATION VOICE

Rate this Entry

Aside from Representative Lofgren, thanks are also due to the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the American Immigration Law Foundation and Immigration Voice. AILA as usual worked behind the scenes to try and push USCIS to reverse course while it's sister organization AILF quickly assembled a large number of plaintiffs for a major class action law suit. With the threat of a massive lawsuit, USCIS felt the heat needed to motivate them and the fact that the suit was about to be filed surely contributed to USCIS' quick reversal of course. AILF is playing an increasingly vital role in the pro-immigration community giving us the ability to stand up for immigrants in the courts - often the only place many problems can be resolved.

Finally, a new voice - Immigration Voice - emerged to do what has never been effectively done in the past - organize the grassroots employment immigrant community. IV's Flower Campaign and its San Jose protest were firsts and garnered the attention of the nation's media and managed to humanize what for many was a dry technical issue. IV was also extremely effective at conveying news to its members and to the entire pro-immigration community (including this lawyer) and know IV will now be a critical part of future advocacy efforts. I'm looking forward to seeing the organization grow in size and influence.

Just a few days back I was decrying how the anti-immigration community was able to whip the pro-immigration community in the CIR bill because of their ability to mobilize their grassroots supporters. Now you can see how our side  - which, after all, represents the views of most Americans - can win the same way.

[NOTE - An astute poster suggested mentioning the Azulay firm in Chicago which jumped into the fray and quickly filed a lawsuit challenging the July 2nd memo. I agree and so wish to tip my hat to the folks at that firm and to apologize for the omission.]

You said it right Greg. I hope all of us immigrants would not stop here and take our fight forward. In my opinion, the real fight has just now begin. We need to pressure Congress to make changes to the EB process to re-capture unused numbers from previous years and exempt spouses and children from the cap. We have only won the first step, if we don't win the rest of the fight some of us will be waiting for the card for years to come.

Thank you Mr. Greg for your up-to-date commentary on this whole issue. I have been so depressed with this situation since July 2nd and I couldn't sleep well all these days. Finally, I have gained my hope back and I feel gratitude to everyone who has turned this situation in our favor!

Justice was done. Thanks to all parties who were concerned with our plight. I am impressed by Immigration Voice. IV seems to bring us, the intending legal skilled immigrants, together in an honorable fashion.

    Greg:

I'd like to second what you said - thanks all around to Rep. Zoe Lofgren, AILA, AILF, IV etc. However, we all owe our thanks to you too. This Blog was like a lifeline, during this very stressful time. You did a great job keeping us updated - at all hours - and it allowed us to express and share our thoughts and concerns.

In my opinion immigration lawyers will take a break now, cashing from the huge number of applications to be filled. There will be no further push for reform.

    Hi Greg,

Can you clarify what you mean by below. My application was filed on 2nd and received at USCIS. I havent received anything back, so does this mean my application will be accepted or are they still rejecting July 2nd filers?

"We presume some folks are still waiting on their July 2nd cases to be returned and are debating refiling new cases rather than waiting."

Azulay, Horn & Seiden is surprisingly omitted from the list of people and groups thanked and they should be recognized for taking action when others only threatened. They courageously stepped to the forefront on behalf of all wronged immigrants, their clients and others, and they clearly need to be recognized as a major catalyst for these awesome results.
